Talented young athletes get grant money

Five young locals were recently presented with Sporting Achievement Grants totalling $1,500 by the City of Greater Geraldton, in partnership with the Mid West Sports Federation (MWSF).

This was the second round of the Sporting Achievement Grants initiated in April this year and managed through the MWSF, to provide a much needed boost for young Mid West sports participants to meet some of the travel expenses associated with being in a state or national team.

City CEO, Ken Diehm, and MWSF Chairman, Graham Greenaway presented the five successful athletes with a cheque for $300 each.

Mr Diehm said the program enabled high achieving young athletes to compete at the highest level and gain more experience.

"It is hoped that through this program funding can make a difference to talented athletes who might otherwise not have been able to financially cope with the vast costs of being in a state or national team," he said.

Successful applicants were:

Corey Taylor, who attended the 2013 UCI World BMX Championships in New Zealand,  where he made it to the semi finals and is currently ranked 11th in the world.

Luc Shepherd to represent WA in soccer at the Singa Cup for the Under 14 Boys in the WA State Regional Team.

Kailey Farrell to represent WA in soccer at the Singa Cup for the Under 16 Girls WA State Regional Team.

Callum Miragliotta for representing WA in soccer at the Singa Cup for the Under 14 Boys WA State Regional Team.

Taylor Miragliotta to represent WA in soccer at the Singa Cup for the Under 13 Boys WA State Regional Team.
