Local Community, Respect & Equality Champion is raising awareness of family violence on her breakfast radio show

ABC Midwest and Wheatbelt's Chief of Staff, Natasha Harradine is a Community, Respect and Equality (CRE) Community Champion.

The CRE project is a family violence prevention initiative managed by local family service organisation Desert Blue Connect. It forms part of the CRE Strategic Action Plan for the Prevention of Family Violence in Geraldton.

Community Champions are local leaders who promote messages about family violence in Geraldton by being visible, approachable and attending awareness events and activities.

Natasha’s message as a Community Champion is “don’t be afraid to speak out”.

As a journalist Natasha has covered a number of family violence cases and was shocked by how often people who experienced violence are asked what they did to make the other person so angry. “There is no excuse for using violence,” Ms Harradine said.

She aims to provide information through regular interviews throughout December to help raise awareness around family violence, encourage people to speak out and seek support, and let the community know that family violence is preventable.

“Violence is never ok, and people who are experiencing family violence need to know that it is not their fault,” she said.

“There are support services in Geraldton that will work with you to help you find a way to safety.”

Ms Harradine said we all have a role to play in preventing family violence.

“Use of language in the media and everyday conversations is an important tool in the prevention of family violence over the long term,” she said. “If we are more aware of the language that we use, and the language that is used around us, we can challenge the normalisation of violence in a very simple and safe way.”

If you or someone you know is affected by family violence, local support services are available through Desert Blue Connect on 9964 2742 or Chrysalis House Women’s Refuge on 9964 2173.

Information and counselling is also available over the phone from 1800 Respect (1800 737 732) or online at www.1800respect.org.au

Local Community, Respect & Equality Champion has a creative expression to prevent violence

Geraldton based artist Phil Doncon is a Community, Respect and Equality (CRE) Community Champion.

Phil’s messages as a Community Champion are around utilising different forms of self-expression to help men deal with negative emotions “I’m a bloke, I get angry and frustrated, but when I do I actively seek out an outlet for those feelings, maybe hit the waves, punch out a painting or bust a move” Phil says. “As men it’s important for us to be able to find that form of expression that works for us, to enable us to process any negative emotions that come up in a healthy way. Violence is never ok.”

Through his live art platform Paint Storm, Phil uses music, dance and live painting to engage audiences at schools and community events with messages of healthy expression, relationship skills and resilience.

At The Exhibition of Blank Canvases, at the Geraldton Yacht Club on Friday 1 December, you will be able to see Phil in action. He will be creating 12 large canvases in a high energy three hour show with music and dance. Phil’s work will also be on display at Art and Soul by the Sea on Marine Terrace from December 8. Information about the Community, Respect and Equality Project and local support services for those affected by family violence will be available at both events.

Local Community, Respect & Equality Champion set to promote a Peaceful Life for All

Local Geraldton resident Sheryl Major is more than happy to take the opportunity to become a Community, Respect and Equality (CRE) Community Champion.

Sheryl’s message as a Community Champion is ‘Together we can build stronger families.’

“Growing up in the seventies I remember hearing and seeing family violence occurring in the community, but everyone was conditioned to mind their own business and not get involved. As a result, people experiencing violence suffered alone in shameful silence.”

“It shouldn’t be that way,” Ms Major said.

“Everyone should know Violence is NEVER ok and that there is help available.”

After a long personal journey which included receiving a scholarship from the Soroptimists Geraldton to complete the New Opportunities for Women (NOW) Program, Ms Major is now studying a Certificate IV in Community Services at Central Regional TAFE and is currently undertaking a work placement with the SHINE program.

“Everyone would benefit from learning about foundation life and healthy relationships skills.”

“Self-confidence, self-awareness and the ability to communicate needs and emotions calmly and openly are needed so situations can be resolved peacefully. By supporting each other to express ourselves in healthier ways, we can make our families stronger and stop family violence before it starts.”

Indian Ocean Drive Safety Package Underway

Work is underway this week to install audible edge and centre lines on Indian Ocean Drive, one of the improvements recommended by the recently released Road Safety Review report.

Public safety is a priority for Main Roads, as is the safety of our workers out on the road, so for the duration of these works we ask that drivers remain patient with the traffic management on site.

Main Roads has also installed advanced guide signs at the end of the current passing lanes to let drivers know how far they’ll need to travel before they reach the next passing lane opportunity.

Where signs were found to be less reflective they have been replaced, and line maintenance has also been carried out to ensure the lines are whiter and brighter for vehicles travelling along the route in all conditions.

Planning for the first set of passing lanes is well underway, with tenders to be advertised early in the new year and construction scheduled to begin near Ledge Point by April 2018.

Drivers along Indian Ocean Drive will see a lot happening over the next few years. Other recommendations such as the wide centre line treatment (similar to the Great Northern Highway between Muchea and Wubin in the Wheatbelt and the Coalfields Highway in the South West) are in the planning stages with funding to be sought through the normal budgetary processes.

Thank you for your patience and assistance when encountering changed traffic conditions, road works and temporary traffic management impediments.

The March Against Violence (MAV), an annual event by Desert Blue Connect will be held on Friday 24th November 2017 to raise awareness of family violence and sexual assault, and promote healthy relationships.

This year’s event will be held at the Geraldton Multipurpose Centre and commences at 9am. Following speeches by Sergeant Shilo O’Neill from WA Police and local community champions, the general public are invited to march through the Geraldton streets. The MAV is a peaceful community event which also pays respects to the West Australians who die each year as a result of family violence.

The MAV is timed to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, also known as White Ribbon Day which is held on 25th of November each year.

According to Our Watch, 1 in 3 Australian women have experienced physical violence since the age of 15, 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual violence and on average, at least one women a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia.

Mid West-Gascoyne District Superintendent Mike Bell said, “domestic violence is one of our highest policing priorities because of the harmful and long lasting effects is has – both physically and psychologically. We hope as many community members as possible join us at this event to help spread the message that violence is never ok”.

The event is aligned with a Men’s Breakfast, organised by local men, which will run earlier that day starting at 7:15am. The Men’s Breakfast will be held at the Geraldton Club and features guest speaker Roger Hitchcock, White Ribbon Ambassador and Community, Respect & Equality (CRE) Champion.
