A Kings Park in Geraldton

Press release from the Nationals.

Nationals WA candidate for Geraldton, Shane Van Styn has today confirmed his support for the establishment of The Moresby Range Regional Park project as proposed by local resident and land owner, Forbes Spillman.

This would involve a plan to purchase Wynarling farm in the Moresby Ranges. Wynarling includes approximately 8 kilometres of the Moresby Range escarpment and is probably the closest large land holding to any major regional city anywhere in Australia.

Mr Spillman said; “Since 1994 I have had the dream of revegetating the Moresby Ranges to return them to their natural glory and create a regional park which can be enjoyed by the people, just like Kings Park in Perth.”

Van Styn says he shared Mr Spillman’s vision and he stated the benefits of establishing the park included:

• Open access to the ranges by the public
• New bushwalking/adventure trails
• Increased tourism opportunities
• Wildlife refuge
• A green corridor linking the inland to the sea
• A possible 950 hectare carbon sink

“Geraldton is continually looking for ways to boost tourism and here is a significant project that would offer a major boost to Geraldton tourism and at the same time offer significant environmental benefits.” Mr Van Styn said.

Van Styn acknowledged the work retiring Nationals member Grant Woodhams had contributed to the project and said with the right ongoing political leadership the project was achievable and would benefit the people of Geraldton long into the future.

Mr Van Styn said, “This is another example of how The Nationals are working on a clear vision for Geraldton to become a vibrant regional capital city.”
