Local Community, Respect & Equality Champion set to promote a Peaceful Life for All

Local Geraldton resident Sheryl Major is more than happy to take the opportunity to become a Community, Respect and Equality (CRE) Community Champion.

The CRE project is a family violence prevention initiative managed by local family service organisation Desert Blue Connect. It forms part of the CRE Strategic Action Plan for the Prevention of Family Violence in Geraldton.

Community Champions are local leaders who promote messages about family violence in Geraldton by being visible, approachable and attending awareness events and activities.

Sheryl’s message as a Community Champion is ‘Together we can build stronger families.’

“Growing up in the seventies I remember hearing and seeing family violence occurring in the community, but everyone was conditioned to mind their own business and not get involved. As a result, people experiencing violence suffered alone in shameful silence.”

“It shouldn’t be that way,” Ms Major said.

“Everyone should know Violence is NEVER ok and that there is help available.”

After a long personal journey which included receiving a scholarship from the Soroptimists Geraldton to complete the New Opportunities for Women (NOW) Program, Ms Major is now studying a Certificate IV in Community Services at Central Regional TAFE and is currently undertaking a work placement with the SHINE program.

“Everyone would benefit from learning about foundation life and healthy relationships skills.”

“Self-confidence, self-awareness and the ability to communicate needs and emotions calmly and openly are needed so situations can be resolved peacefully. By supporting each other to express ourselves in healthier ways, we can make our families stronger and stop family violence before it starts.”
