PELSAERT’S PREDICAMENT: “WHERE IS MY WRECK?”
When Commandeur Pelsaert returned in the Sardam to rescue the treasure and survivors from the Batavia wreck he found nothing but open sea. His desperate search for the wreck site took nearly a month, during which time, unbeknownst to him, Jeronimus Corneliszoon and his fellow-mutineers continued their murderous attacks on the other survivors. Kevin Altham, Master 3 Mariner and long-term fisherman in the waters of the Batavia Coast, together with Dr Howard Gray, use skerricks of detail from Pelsaert’s log-book to plot his desperate month-long search.
