Geraldton Combined Equestrian Club hosts its annual 3 day showjumping extravaganza, this Friday to Sunday. They showjumping championships draw the state and country’s top riders, for almost 40 classes over the weekend, ranging from 30cm to the ‘Midwest Vet, Horse of the year’ 140cm class on Sunday.
An expected 250 horses will be vying for around $10,000 dollars in prize money, with an anticipated 1,000 entries in the classes over the weekend. To cater for all these competitors, two arenas will be running from essentially, sunrise, to sunset on all 3 days.
Western Australian rider, Rory Hovell, along with Northampton native, Alison Rowland, will be bringing a stable of horses from Rory’s ‘Yalambi’ stud at Margaret River. Rory and Alison recently returned from Europe, where they represented Australia at the prestigious, Nations Cup.
4 time Northampton Show 6-bar winner (3 in the past 3 years) and Geraldton showjumping stalwart, Ross Newman will be competing on two horses, including his sensational 6-bar horse, ‘Sansay’.
Friday’s competition starts at 8am with a 100cm class in the main arena. Classes increase in height, to the last class of the day, the Great Northern Rural Services 130cm open. The excitement continues on Saturday, with the Geraldton Toyota & Nufab Industries 125cm classes and the Hygain Feeds 135cm class. The atmosphere will be buzzing on Sunday when horses and riders compete in championship classes, including the Geraldton Stock Feeds, ‘Young Rider’ class, where WA’s ‘up-and-coming’ young riders will be showing their ability around a 120cm course.
Without the support of major sponsor, Midwest Vet Centre, along with New Millennium Roof Restoration & Painting; Leon Baker Jewellers; Peter Groom Settlements and a host of other local businesses, the show wouldn’t be the success it is. The show, commonly known as ‘the July show’, is one of the premier competitions on the Western Australian showjumping calendar and a great boost to the Geraldton economy.
Food and refreshments will be available all weekend, with sponsors invited to enjoy the sponsors tent on Sunday for the Championship classes.
