Do your part this Clean Up Australia Day

Geraldton is home to some of the best beaches and bushland in Australia and the City of Greater Geraldton is calling members of the community to come together to help keep it that way.

Every year tonnes of rubbish plagues our environment and Clean Up Australia Day aims to reduce litter that is impacting our streets, parks and waterways.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn encouraged members of the community to register.

“Registering for Clean Up Australia Day is really easy and simple – you can either join an existing group or create your own,” he said.

“The more people involved, the more fun it is for everyone. You can even round out the day with a sausage sizzle and nice cold drink.

“Put on your gloves and help us reduce waste in our local parks, streets, bushland and beaches for a cleaner local environment.”

The major source of rubbish in WA is plastics, closely followed by paper, metals, glass, polystyrene, wood and rubber.

“Some of these items can take up to 500 years to breakdown. Chemicals are also released in the breakdown process, which are harmful to flora and fauna,” added Mayor Van Styn.

To support those partaking in Clean Up Australia Day, the City will provide additional bags and gloves as well as bins through ToxFree who are generously supporting the day with the delivery and pickup of skip bins.

National Clean Up Australia Day is held on Sunday 4 March and is an all-day event.

There is also a Business Clean Up Day on Tuesday 27 February as well as a Schools Clean Up Day on Friday 2 March.

To join in on a registered Clean Up site visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au. Before registering a new site please contact the City’s Community Development Officer steved@cgg.wa.gov.au to check suitability and obtain support with bins, gloves and bags.

Clean Up Australia Day is also supported by Northern Agriculture Catchments Council (NACC) and Woolworths Seacrest.

Local Cadets Best In State

Geraldton’s Number 711 squadron has been named the most proficient Air Force Cadet Squadron in the state for 2017.

Commander Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) David Power received the RSL Efficiency Shield on behalf of the squadron at a ceremony at RAAF Base Pearce in January in front of more than 100 cadets and their guests. The cadets were part of a graduation parade recognising an intensive three weeks leadership and management training course which will prepare them for future leadership positions.

The parade was reviewed by the WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson and featured a flying display and fly past by PC9 aircraft of Number 2 Flying Training School from the Pearce airbase. The Air Force Cadets is fully supported by the Royal Australian Air Force.

The efficiency shield is presented each year to the state's cadet squadron that has achieved the highest ratings in a range of criteria over the training year.

"This is the first time 711 Squadron has won the award, and one of only a hand full of times it has been awarded to a non-metropolitan Squadron.", said Flight Lieutenant (AAFC) David Power.

“The Australian Air Force Cadets is one of the most dynamic, effective and satisfying youth programs available and is open to young people aged 13-18 years".

“The cadets get to do the sort of things that most other young people only watch on television, including learning to fly, undertaking bushcraft where they learn to operate radios, and cooking and survival skills. The cadets can also participate in interstate and international travel as well as study aeronautics, navigation, meteorology and radio communications, first aid, and music.”, said FLTLT(AAFC) Power.

According to FLTLT(AAFC) Power, a high proportion of serving Air Force personnel developed their career interest in aviation as cadets, and many others have continued their involvement in community affairs through their cadet training.

711 Squadron parades Monday nights during the school term, and prospective cadets are encouraged to attend a brief family information session to be held on Monday, 12 February, at the Geraldton Army Reserve Depot, Lester Avenue, at 7pm. Those who cannot make the information session are encouraged to visit the Squadron any Monday night during the school term.

Geraldton Camp School plays core role in education

Member for Geraldton Ian Blayney MLA is calling on the Education Minister to reverse her intention to alter the management and running of the Geraldton Camp School.

‘It is still a huge concern that the Minister has not set out a framework outlining the future management of the Geraldton Camp School’, said Mr Blayney.

‘The camp school is extremely popular and is used by many schools in the area. The delay in clarifying how this facility will be run in 2019 is causing angst among many members of the community.

‘The camp school is particularly important for those children who receive their education through SOTA. Most of these children live in isolated areas and coming together at the camp school to take part in leadership activities and team building tasks plays an invaluable role in the learning experience.

‘I disagree with the Minister’s statement that camp schools are not the ‘core business of education’. Education encompasses so much more than learning literacy and numeracy.

‘Education is about nurturing the whole child, allowing them to grow, and develop socially and emotionally, as well as academically. The Geraldton Camp School allows for just that. And it’s one of the only facilities in the Midwest that does.

‘I am calling on the Minister to immediately re-consider her plans to change the management of this facility.

‘The camp school has serviced the Midwest community successfully for a long time. To change this exceptional service would be a big mistake.’

Tour guides to receive specialised training

Local cruise ship tour guides will undertake specialised training to enhance the cruise experience.

To ensure the best experience for people visiting Geraldton, local cruise ship tour guides will undertake specialised training to become accredited as a WA Shorex Guide.

Funded by Tourism WA, the short training course will be delivered by Tour Guides WA to Geraldton community members and volunteers.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the training would ensure an even better shore experience for cruise ship visitors.

“Our tour guides are absolutely imperative to the experience that thousands of tourists from cruise ships have here in Geraldton,” he said.

“Every year we are getting more and more cruise ships stopping here and the benefits to our local economy are huge.

“It is important for us to help facilitate and grow the skills of our wonderful tour guides as they are ambassadors for our community and often create the first impression of our town.”

Tour Guides WA will deliver the specialised one-and-a-half day training program they have developed to provide a pool of ‘cruise ready’ WA Shorex Guides.

Once training is completed, these guides will be assessed to hold and maintain Guiding Organisations Australia’s Tour Guide Accreditation, affiliated with the World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations, and recognised internationally.

Tourism WA’s cruise spokesperson Christine Cole said tour guides have a very important role to play in the overall success of a cruise itinerary.

“Cruise lines consider unique landside visits an integral element of the overall cruise experience,” she said.

“Tour guides conducting shore tours need specialised skills to make sure cruise passengers have a memorable visit.”

With over 20 years experience in the industry, President of Tour Guides WA Mrs Cherie Toovey will facilitate the program.

Over the last four years, Mrs Toovey has facilitated Tourism WA’s State-wide delivery of three phases of ‘Welcoming Cruise Passengers to the West’ workshops across the State’s nine active port destinations.

Tour coach drivers, tourism attraction guides, cruise ship meet and greet volunteers and others in the community interested in learning more about this exciting opportunity are invited to contact Cruise Ship and Visitor Information Officer at the Geraldton Visitor Centre, Joanne Brown, via email GVCmembers@cgg.wa.gov.au or telephone 9956 6670.

Suicide prevention trial site makes progress

Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price confirmed that the Mid West region Suicide Prevention Trial, one of 12 national trial sites to combat suicide, is making good progress in identifying effective approaches to suicide prevention.

In 2017, the Mid West region received a share of the Federal Government’s $192 million election commitment to strengthen mental health care in regional Australia to run the three-year trial.

“The Mid West region has a much higher rate of suicide than the national average, and that is due to the large proportion of high risk populations we have in the region” Ms Price said.

“We know that Aboriginal people are susceptible to depression which is closely linked to suicide, but so are farmers, fly in/fly out workers and fishers working in remote communities.

“The Mid West suicide prevention trial site is focused on helping reduce suicide rates among these at-risk populations, and to sharing this knowledge across Australia.

“We have tasked the PHNs, the overarching federal health framework nationally, to come up with a suite of strategies to combat suicide.

‘These strategies need to be inclusive, need to be bold, and most importantly, they need to work” Ms Price said.

The communities of Geraldton, Mullewa, Morawa, Mt Magnet, Meekatharra and Carnarvon are being targeted during the Mid West trial, and each will have the opportunity to develop a suicide prevention action plan. The PHN’s suicide prevention trial coordinator employed has already visited many of these sites, in preparation for this next stage.

The trial will facilitate learning about how best to prevent suicide at a local level and how best support can be provided to at-risk individuals.

The four-level approach includes:

  1. Focusing on general practitioner (GP) training to identify and improve the treatment of depression;
  2. Educating the public via a depression awareness campaign
  3. Cooperating with stakeholders and community facilitators to provide training to improve the recognition of symptoms of depression and referrals to GPs
  4. Low threshold support for individuals, high risk groups and their families.

People needing access to psychological services and support can seek a referral from a GP to the Midwest Mental Health Portal. More information is available at www.wapha.org.au/mental-health-portal

Chapman River mountain bike trail designs revealed

If you love bike riding and adventure, you won’t want to miss seeing the concept plans for the Chapman River mountain bike trails at a community information session on Tuesday 6 February at the QEII Centre.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the concept plans were exciting and offered something for everyone.

“I’ve had a sneak peek at the designs and I can’t wait to try out the new facilities being built in Spalding Park,” he said.

“Bike riders of all ages and abilities will be able to hone their riding skills on a pump and jump track and skills loop before meeting at a new trailhead and heading out on the formalised 11km long river loop trail.”

In November 2016, Council endorsed the Chapman River Regional Park Mountain Bike Master Plan, which ensures the Park is shared and enjoyed by all recreational users including mountain bike riders.

“Over the past 23 years the City has developed a number of plans and strategies regarding the environmental management and recreational use of the Chapman River Regional Park,” Mayor Van Styn added.

“It is exciting to see years of community consultation resulting in a project that is sustainable and will enhance the environmental and cultural values of the Park.

Project construction is scheduled to begin in March with an estimated date of completion before the end of the financial year.

The Chapman River Mountain Bike Trials Community Information Session is on Tuesday 6 February 2018 from 6.30-7.15pm in the QEII Seniors & Community Centre Upper Hall on Durlacher Street. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for members of the community to ask questions regarding the designs.

Construction of projects in the Chapman River Regional Park Mountain Bike Master Plan projects  is joint funded with the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program, managed by the Mid West Development Commission, contributing $235,500, Lotterywest $65,000 and the City providing $49,500 towards the delivery of the projects.

Funding to build a stronger community in Geraldton

Member for Geraldton Ian Blayney MLA is pleased that the City of Greater Geraldton has been awarded $16,585 through the Youth Development Scholarship Program as part of the Country Local Government Fund (CLGF).

‘As a significant employer in Geraldton, the City is well placed to create opportunities for young people in the region’, said Mr Blayney.

‘It will allow local government employees to gain valuable skills, knowledge and leadership capacity through real life experience and will provide local opportunities to further develop their careers.

‘The Liberal led Government introduced this fund as the first Royalties for Regions initiative back in 2009 to assist country local governments to support and build communities.

‘These prospects will help to ensure the retention of young people in Geraldton, enabling them to build stronger partnerships within the community sector. This, in turn, will help to promote the sustainability and future success of our economy.

‘I would like to congratulate the City of Greater Geraldton for securing the funding and I wish the chosen participants all the best throughout the program and in their future careers.’

Earlier this month the Government announced that a total of 70 grants have been awarded to 39 country local governments across four programs through the CLGF.
