QEII catering for people from all walks of life

Mayor Shane Van Styn with members of the QEII Art Class.

The Queen Elizabeth II Seniors and Community Centre is breaking the mold with their popular inter-generational art class, catering for people from all walks of life.

Every week, beautiful masterpieces are created from people of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds.

Local artist Jim Evans runs the class and is inspired by the diversity of his class members.

“The youngest person I’ve had in the class was seven years old and the oldest was 104,” he said.

“I have people come in here from all facets of life including seniors, high school students and people with disabilities.

“I have beginners in here and people that have always wanted to learn to paint through to advanced artists so it’s wonderful to see such a wide range skill set in the class and we see some amazing work produced.”

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the aim of the QEII Centre was to promote inclusivity and that’s exactly what the art class encourages.

“It’s great to see such a diverse range of people attending the art class and all of the other programs that the centre holds,” he said.

“There is a stereotype around a lot of the classes that they are only open to seniors but this isn’t the case. We encourage people of all ages to see how they can benefit from the QEII Centre.”

Owned and operated by the City, the QEII Centre offers over 30 programs with everything from indoor bowls, computer lessons, ukulele classes and dance lessons.

For a full run down on all the events visit the City website or call the QEII Centre on 9956 6636.

Amazing tale of customers helping find stolen boat

On Thursday evening a 4.5 metre boat and trailer worth $32,500 was stolen from Midwest Marine. The offenders had cut the fence to gain access to the boat yard.

The following day a customer of Midwest Marine came in to pay his bill, and learned of the stolen boat.

Later, that same man was sharing the story of the stolen boat with his brother, a keen fisherman.

The boat was quite unique, and stood out to the brother of the customer. It sounded a lot like a boat he had seen on the side of the road earlier in the day.

Being a keen fisherman he stopped to check out an interesting looking boat on the side of the road, only to learn that the people towing the boat had broken down. Being the kind Mid West local he was, he assisted them in towing the boat to their residence in Northampton.

It was only when he was talking with his brother later that afternoon that he realised he had in fact assisted the thieves.

They got in touch with Midwest Marine, who jumped on Google Earth and located the house, then sent the cops around.

The boat was recovered, though it had been stripped already.

Kit, from Midwest Marine, told us that the boat was definitely targeted, as it was quite unique.

Thunderstorm Alert for Mid West

The following alert has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Continue to take action with thunderstorms coming in parts of the Midwest Gascoyne

Thursday 14 January 2016 - 5:58 PM

*The warning area for this storm has been reduced in size

If you live in an area bounded by Dongara to Mount Magnet to Meekatharra to Three Rivers to Mount Augustus to Overlander Roadhouse to Kalbarri to Dongara you should continue to take action and stay safe with more thunderstorms to come.

This does not include Geraldton, Northampton, Kalbarri and Meekatharra. This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous.
WHAT TO DO:
• If outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.
• Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
• Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning.
• If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home.
IF DRIVING:
• Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
• Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers.
• Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen powerlines and loose debris.
• If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.
• Take care in areas that have been flooded and be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged.
Take care in western parts of the Midwest Gascoyne
The severe weather warning for the area west of Overlander Roadhouse to Kalbarri and coastal parts between Kalbarri and Dongara has been cancelled, but people in these areas should take care when going outside and assessing damage.

WHAT TO DO:
DFES has these tips to help you and your family stay safe once the storm has passed:

• Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
• Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
• Keep clear of fallen powerlines, they are dangerous and should always be treated as live.
• Assess your home, car and property for damage.
• Check to see if your neighbour needs help.
• If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs.
• If your home has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
People are being urged to do what they can to help themselves, if it is safe to do so, before calling the SES for assistance.
WHAT EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE DOING:
Emergency services are currently monitoring the situation.
ROAD CLOSURES:
Road information may also be available by calling Main Roads WA on 138 138 or visiting www.mainroads.wa.gov.au
THUNDERSTORM DETAILS:
As at 4.27pm on Thursday 14 January 2016 the Bureau of Meteorology advises that there is a risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and continuing into the evening. At 4:00pm satellite imagery showed a line of possibly severe thunderstorms inland from the coast from north of Northampton to Overlander Roadhouse and moving slowly eastwards.
Storms may be accompanied by damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfal which may lead to flash flooding. Storms could cause damage to homes and property.
The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year but severe weather may occur in some parts of the warning area.

IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE:

• If your home has been badly damaged by a storm, call the SES on 132 500
• In a life threatening situation call 000

After a storm State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers make temporary repairs to homes that have been badly damaged, such as roofs that have been ripped off or large fallen trees on homes and cars. Please contact your insurance company to organise permanent.
KEEP UP TO DATE:
Visit www.dfes.wa.gov.au, call 13 DFES (13 3337), follow DFES on Twitter @dfes_wa or listen to news bulletins.

And the winner of the Best Christmas Lights is…

Matt, Daneale and Zara Buckley of Kidz Retreat.

Kidz Retreat was very honoured to win the $500.00 from S & K Electrical. Their main reason for putting a light display up is for their daughter Zara, and were overwhelmed with the response from the community.

Matt and Daneale have decided to add another $500 from their own pocket and donate this and their $500 winnings to a child friendly organisation. They and their staff will put together a list of possible organisations and will get the parents who use Kidz Retreat to vote on which one they think it should go towards.

Congratulations Kidz Retreat for a great Christmas Lights Display and well done on your wonderful gesture of passing on the winnings to a worthy organisation.

Letter to Geraldton community from Salvos following robbery

To the people of the Geraldton community,

We are writing this letter to thank the community for the response to the break in at our Salvation Army facility just before Christmas. As many of you know, the Salvation Army Geraldton Corps experienced a break and enter on the 20th of December. When I arrived to check the alarm, I was confronted by a masked intruder wielding a crow bar who stole a large amount of the donated toys and food we were preparing to hand out at during the Christmas period to families in need around Geraldton. Aside from the theft, a significant amount of damage was done to our facility. The ongoing repairs have meant that the Salvation Army Geraldton Family Crisis centre has had to close until the damage is repaired. We apologise to the needy who would be looking to us for assistance in the coming weeks. We are working as hard as we can to get our facility up and running again so that we can be there for you in your time of need.

After the break in, the Geraldton Community rallied around us, with a constant stream of donations of food, toys and money coming in over the days following. It is due to these donations that we were able to maintain and indeed increase our assistance to needy families this Christmas.

We would like to thank all those who made donations, rang with offers of support and assistance, as well as the well-wishers who along with most members of the community voiced their sadness and disgust at this incident and those responsible. We would also like to thank particularly the following individuals and businesses who made significant contributions to our efforts, first amongst those being, Rigter’s IGA group for their $5000.00 donation.

They’re community spirit is wonderful and we are so grateful for their incredible support. We would also like to thank Mayor Shane Van Styn, MLCs Paul Brown and Darren West, Sun City Security, as well as all the members of the media who helped us publicise this incident. I would especially like to thank the team at Everything Geraldton who helped us get the word out almost straight away, and other members of the local media including Arthur Muhl at ABC Mid-West, Tasha Tania at GWN7 Regional, and the Geraldton Guardian newspaper. There are probably many more we have missed but to all those that brought donations in or those who made contact offering assistance and support, we are deeply appreciative of you and your efforts.

Our Christmas efforts this year were a success despite this incident. We were able to assist all those that presented for support at Christmas, and no child missed out this year. We are proud of the response from the Geraldton Community, and we pledge to continue, with the community’s ongoing support, to be there for those that are struggling in the Mid-West.

Blessings,

Lieutenants Jeff and Jacqui Milkins and the team at the Salvation Army Geraldton Corps
