This training program is designed for professionals working in community services, health & education who provide services to children, youth, adults & families who have experienced trauma. The ‘8 principles of trauma-informed practice’ will be discussed and practical strategies to implement these in various contexts (e.g. schools, foster care, residential care, office based workplaces etc.) will be explored. The Sanctuary Model (Dr Sandra Bloom) is introduced as an example of a trauma-informed practice model during this workshop.

Learning Outcomes:

Day 1: Understanding Trauma

  1. Identify the impact of trauma on: child development, secure attachment and brain development.
  2. Understand the relationship between a child’s trauma history and his or her behaviours and responses.
  3. Discuss the ‘8 Principles of Trauma-Informed Care’.

Day 2: Trauma Informed Care
1. Apply an understanding of trauma-informed care to:

  •  Create safe environments and build strong relationships
  •  Support well-being and avoid trauma re-enactment

2. Apply an understanding of trauma-informed care to:

  •  Develop and support workers, including self-care strategies to manage
  •  vicarious trauma
  •  Enhance service delivery and recognise the importance of partnership at  every level.

3. Identify resources & supports for further professional development.
