A letter from the founder of Everything Geraldton
/Hi,
My name is Jason Smith, founder of Everything Geraldton. I would like to share with you
- the progress Everything Geraldton has made since launching,
- some exciting changes we have just made here at Everything Geraldton,
- and also thank you for your invaluable support.
I launched Everything Geraldton in December 2012 with the goal of providing a service that would meet a lot of needs of the Geraldton community, by providing an easy way of discovering all sorts of things in Geraldton online.
We started with a website (everythinggeraldton.com) and a Facebook page (fb.com/everythinggeraldton), and soon afterwards launched our app for iPhone and Android devices.
Since the app launched, it has had over 4000 downloads and growing daily, and the website now averages tens of thousands of hits each month and increasing. We also now have over 1750 locals who receive our regular newsletter each week.
Our Facebook community has also seen amazing growth with over 8400 fans at last count, most of whom are in Geraldton or nearby.
Some of our most popular website and app features have been:
- Business Directory - easy way to find local businesses
- The Geraldton Calendar - free to post your community events and very handy way of finding out what's happening in Geraldton.
- Job Vacanicies - Businesses can advertise positions available
- Buy and Sell - A free online classifieds just for Geraldton
- Weather, Movie Times, Lost and Found
We are very pleased to announce some changes that have occurred recently, some of which you may have already noticed.
Welcome Veronica !
With the huge increase in things happening of late, it was time to hire. Welcome to Veronica Bishop who has come on as an Accounts Manager. Her warm personality and friendly manner is great to have around, and she's keen to help you in any way she can. If you have any advertising enquiries you can ring her on 0434476332.
Geraldton News
We have seen exponential growth in recent months of our online news service, and have now adopted the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance's Code of Ethics and joined their organisation.
We owe a great thanks to you, our readers and users, who keep us informed about what is happening in the city and surrounds, so we can publish timely and relevant information for the people of Geraldton to read.
As we don't have any newspapers to fill or print deadlines to meet, we simply publish things as they happen, and have found many people who prefer to read their news electronically love this service. The news is available on the app as well as the website.
Sports News
We would love to introduce to you our sports news contributors- Peter Fiorenza and Grant Woodhams. You may know that the two of them host a show on Radio Mama each Saturday morning at 10am called Sport Shed. As sporting enthusiasts they love writing about all things sport related, and we are very grateful to be able to offer you their articles.
You can read the sports news from the app as well as the website, and if you are a true sports nut you might like to download their app called "Sport Shed". Search for it in the app store.
Business Directory
Our online Business Directory has been a huge hit with people looking for local services. Using our website or app, you can find hundreds of local businesses in all sorts of categories.
We have kept the price to be in the directory very low to help local businesses be found online. It costs less than $1 per day, and we've had some great feedback so far.
For the businesses that have supported Everything Geraldton by advertising in the directory I am truely thankful.
New App Update
We're working on another minor update to our smartphone app that aims to make it even more user friendly. Keep your eye out for it in the coming months. Remember our app is free to download and use.
Home Page Refresh
We've just done a refresh on our website's home page. If you're on your computer, you'll now see some recent headlines alongside the large square navigation icons, sports news and recently posted events beneath, and also a slideshow of images from our sister site Gerogram.com .
We've made a couple of other tweaks across the site too, including slightly increasing the font sizes to make reading the text a little easier.
Our goal is not to look like a regular news site, but to be as user-friendly and easy to navigate as possible.
A Place to have your say
Our new smartphone app has a module in it called "Your Voice". This is a handy way for you to share whatever you like with the people of Geraldton. People post photos, questions, concerns, or general matters, and you can comment and like various posts. You can also "check in" to local places.
Thank you
I am extremely grateful for all the wonderful feedback that has come in since our launch, and would like to thank everyone who has submitted breaking news stories, news ideas, speed camera locations, photos, website and app suggestions, bug reports, and heaps more.
And thanks also to those of you who simply use the site, app and Facebook page. Seeing the traffic numbers consistently increasing has been encouraging.
I live in and love Geraldton, and want to see the best for the Geraldton community. My hope is that Everything Geraldton can continue to serve the people of Geraldton and I'll continue to explore new services we can provide.
Thanks again for your support.
Jason Smith
