Murchison Astrofest and the Bush Professor!

The Murchison Astrofest brings together the current strong interest in astronomy, insight into Aboriginal culture; with a real bush experience.

Come join our Bush Professor, Wajarri Elder Mr Alan Egan who will be conducting guided walks at the Murchison Astrofest. The Bush Professor will show you the unique plants and animals found at the Murchison Settlement. According to Mr Egan, “we want to share our stories with the wider community”.

Mr Egan is a wealth of knowledge about the Murchison bush having grown-up in the Murchison and worked on many of the Murchison pastoral stations. His knowledge about the bush has been handed down from his parents and members of his extended family, who also worked on many of the Murchison pastoral stations. Alan knows many of the bush tucker plants on country and he will conduct guided walks and share his Aboriginal knowledge of the landscape with those who are interested. These guided bush walks will take around 15 minutes.

Joining the Bush Professor will be Wajarri Bush Cooks – father and son duo, Colin Jones (senior and junior) who will have a display of Aboriginal bush foods and for the adventurous there is an opportunity to sample bush tucker.

Murchison identity Mr John Jensen and several Wajarri artists will have their artworks on display too. Rounding off the cultural experience will be live didgeridoo music, guitars, sing-a-longs and opportunity to toast marshmallows by the bonfire.

Of course, no star party is complete without telescopes! Joining the festivities at the Murchison Astrofest will be the Geraldton Astronomy Group, ICRAR and the Perth Astronomy Group with their telescopes galore. But, don’t forget to bring your binoculars for star gazing too!

We look forward to sharing our unique Murchison Astrofest with you!
