City hoping to take over neglected land opposite library

Owned by the Public Transport Authority (PTA), Lot 601 on Marine Tce, Geraldton has languished undeveloped for some years since the redevelopment of the Geraldton Foreshore, with previous development plans for the location falling through.

The City has gained approval from the PTA to use the land for extra Christmas and New Year parking, however, bigger plans could be afoot for the future of the prime location.

The City of Greater Geraldton approached the Mid West Development Commission Board this week, for support in acquiring control of the land.

The MWDC Board has responded positively and will be initiating discussions with the PTA, City and LandCorp to identify the best course of action in its future tenure and development.

City Mayor, Ian Carpenter, said it was time the land was developed and used to its maximum potential.

“We need to have control of this land to ensure that it is developed promptly and in a manner consistent with the Community’s vision. Without control of this land we have limited ability to influence the speed of development and its ultimate use,” he said.
