OPINION - VOLUNTARY EUTHANASIA

Voluntary euthanasia has been in the news in Albany twice in the last month. Late in May the story was about a court appearance relating to possessing the euthanasia drug Nembutal. This weekend the story related to an elderly couple found dead in their home.

With a reputation as a retirement centre - approximately 24 per cent of the City's population is over 60 compared to regional WA's 17 per cent - the right to die is a topic which will be considered by a large number of Albany residents as they continue to age.

Voluntary euthanasia is not a decision to be taken lightly. However, as the pleasure of retirement turns into a daily challenge for existence that erodes a person's quality of life and drains their family and carers, the right to end one's life at a chosen time can add dignity to an inevitable occurrence.

If you or someone you know is thinking of suicide, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.
