Last chance to have your say on the Beresford Foreshore

9 May, 2016

If you love the Beresford Foreshore and are between the ages of 15 and 45 it’s not too late to have your say on the facilities or amenities that would improve this popular stretch of Geraldton coastline.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said registrations for the Beresford Foreshore Community Workshop have been steady over the past three weeks with only a few spots remaining to be filled.

“The response from the community to take part in this workshop has been really great with more than 30 residents aged between 10-85 years already registered to attend,” he said.

“However, we still have a few spots open for teenagers of all ages and members of the community under the age of 45.

“The workshop is an important opportunity for people of all ages to share their thoughts and ideas on the Beresford Foreshore and I would encourage residents to register before it’s too late.”

If you would like to attend the workshop call 9956 6945 or email janellk@cgg.wa.gov.au. Registrations close Thursday 12 May at 5pm.

This dog will help 6 year old Jamie by alerting his parents to seizures

Hello, firstly we would like to introduce ourselves. We are Brent and Michelle REID.

We are fundraising on behalf of our 6 year old son, Jamie.

Jamie was born with a rare brain condition called Bilateral Frontal Polymicrogyria. The result of this is uncontrollable epilepsy (150-350 seizures a week), Autism, Global Development Delays and Intellectual Disabilities.

Jamie has been selected as a suitable candidate for an Autism/Seizure assistance dog. The dog will assist Jamie and the family by alerting us to seizures prior to them occurring. The dog will also assist Jamie personally with his Autism. The assistance dog is trained to disrupt autistic melt downs and ensure Jamies safety when out in public. The assistance dog is trained to be tethered to Jamie allowing him freedom to walk freely without the need to be placed in a trolley/stroller or strong hand grip. Jamie has a penchant to want to get out and run and without the knowledge of his own safety. The assistance dog will be with him at all times and when required will stop Jamie to ensure his safety. This is extremely important in situations where there is water, as Jamie has a fixation with playing with water.

The dog is also trained to be able to track Jamie and locate his should he get out and wander off.

The assistance dog will deliver peace of mind, comfort and safety for Jamie. The opportunity it will give Jamie will be outstanding as it will offer him a greater level of independence that a normal 6 year would enjoy. The assistance dog will open his world and like most special needs kids allow him to feel normal and like he fits.

As part of the process of placing the dog with Jamie, we have agreed to fundraise towards the dogs training. The training of each Smart Pup costs $25,000.00 and as a not for profit organisation they rely on fundraising to be able to provide an assistance dog to the candidate family.

This is where we are asking if you would be able to assist in any way possible to help us achieve this opportunity for Jamie.

Why I changed my mind on the Cashless Welfare Card

When Andrew Forrest first put forward his idea to politicians for a cashless income management system to tackle some of the alcohol and drug abuse that was occurring in our communities, I was fond of the idea.

Having worked first hand with youth in Geraldton I have seen the effects of alcohol abuse on young kids in our communities.

I supported Geraldton being given a chance to trial the card. As Mr Forrest put it, what we're doing now isn't working; we need to try something. And I agreed.

But as time has gone on, and I've spent time trying to research the implementation of the card, I have changed my mind.

There are two reasons.

First, no metric has been decided upon to measure whether or not the card is achieving its stated goal. If crime increases after the implementation of the card, will the government guarantee removing the card and admitting they wasted our money? Would crime rates have gone up anyway and will the card be unfairly blamed? If crime decreases after the card is introduced, how will we even know if it's because of the card, or will the proponents of the card try and take credit? If the people known to abuse alcohol regularly simply move to another town (like what happened in the Pilbara), will the government get rid of the card? We have no idea.

The "trial" seems extraordinarily vague and unscientific.

Secondly, and this is the main reason for my change of heart, is the stigma that will be attached to the very distinct card.

Like it or not, being unemployed and on the dole has a large social stigma attached to it. Heck, most of our surnames are our ancestors' occupations. What we do for a living is a massive part of our self identity in our culture, for better or worse. Think back to any 'small talk' chat you've had with a new acquaintance since you left school. "What do you do?" was most likely one of the 'get to know you' questions. And if you were on the dole, you didn't say "I'm on the dole." You said "I'm looking for work, but I'm a painter." Or "I used to be a teacher but I'm not working currently, I'm a full time carer for my sick mother."

Not all of us are keen to announce our current employment status to the world, just like some of us like to keep private our marital status, or our religious beliefs, or our sexual preference, or our membership at alcoholics anonymous.

But once this card is brought in, every time you pull it out to pay for something, you're loudly announcing to the person serving you, and the people in line behind you, that you don't have a job and rely on tax payer money to make ends meet.

Some of those people serving you will quietly put you in a box in their minds. Some of those people in line behind you will judge you while they inspect what you've chosen to buy with their hard earned tax money.

Some will not.

My credit card doesn't have my job written on it. And thank God too. I don't want to announce what I do for a living everywhere I go.

And I don't think it's right to stigmatise our fellow humans who, for one reason or another, find themselves without a job.

4000 years ago the Israelites had a system whereby farmers weren't allowed to harvest all the way to the edge of their fields. Why? So the poor could obtain food without being stigmatised and having to beg.

Are there people abusing the system, who have no intention of looking for work, and love their tax payer funded drug use?

Sure.

Are they the majority?

Of course not.

Should we stigmatise everyone who's currently unemployed because of the few bad apples?

I don't think so.

Could we consider instead a system just for people known to DCP that need income management help?

Update on "brave" boy who was caught in rocks at foreshore

Police and Fire and Rescue services worked frantically this afternoon to free a 17 year old who had got his arm caught in rocks at Geraldton's foreshore this afternoon. Police say they received the call for assistance at about 2:45 today.

A police spokesperson said the boy had been bodyboarding there as part of a school excursion, and had got his arm caught between two rocks. He was underwater for much of the time, only able to breathe in between waves. "[He was] was washed against the rocks and his arm became jammed between two boulders where he was submerged from large swell with waves crashing over him."

Police said it was "fantastic teamwork" that saw the young man rescued. About 8 police were present, with around 6 in the water, and around another 8 fire and emergency services members. DFES members used an iron bar and wood blocks underwater to jimmy a boulder away in order to free the trapped arm.

Onlookers held grave concerns for the boy who was being rescued, and were very relieved when he was rescued unharmed.

Police and DFES officers managed to grab him and carried him from the water to an awaiting St John Ambulance where he was conveyed to hospital for assessment. The young man was in the water stranded for about half an hour.

I hit a dog this morning: Letter to Editor

"A beautiful tan dog that looked like it might have been a Shar Pei ran out in front of me this morning at 8.30am on Brand Hwy  near Ackland Street. Despite braking I hit him, as did the car next to me.

We tried to find him to take him to the vet but he ran off up the hill- which hopefully means he isn't too injured. The wonderful woman in the red car behind me drove up the hill to try and find him to take him to the vet.

If you are missing a dog fitting this description please contact local vets.

Please people, keep your dogs locked up. This was so distressing for me and the other driver and was completely preventable.

Hopefully this beautiful dog is going to be ok and back with his family soon."

Mullewa Ward councillors expressing interesting in leaving Geraldton and going to Chapman Valley

Two councillors from the City of Greater Geraldton have had discussions with the Shire of Chapman Valley regarding changing the boundaries of the City of Greater Geraldton, so the Mullewa Ward would become part of the Shire of Chapman Valley.

Cr Tahlea Thomas and Cr Jennifer Critch, who run their own independent facebook group called 'Mullewa Councillors', approached the Shire of Chapman Valley without discussing the matter at any formal council meeting, according to CGG Mayor Shane Van Styn.

“I need to make it perfectly clear that council have not considered this matter,” Mayor Van Styn said.

“Two council members have independently taken part in discussions with the Shire of Chapman Valley without consultation or consent from Council.

“It has not been formally discussed at any official Council meetings or forums.”

The Shire of Mullewa amalgamated with the City of Geraldton Greenough on 1 July 2011 to form the City of Greater Geraldton.

The community in Mullewa at the time was overwhelmingly against the amalgamation, with 83.24% of Mullewa voters voting against the merger.

Chapman Valley Shire President, Councillor John Collingwood, said "Chapman Valley has been approached by the Elected Members representing the Mullewa Ward in the City of Greater Geraldton enquiring into our interest in opening dialogue with the City on possible boundary changes.

"Chapman Valley is not committing to anything at all other than to listen to what the City has to say.

"Any proposed boundary changes need to go through a rigorous and detailed analysis to ensure any new entities are financially sustainable and meets the demographic and community interest requirements of the legislated condition for proposed boundary changes."

Mayor Van Styn said "We are happy to look at any proposal but we will need to consider all issues to determine if it is in the best interests of our community.”

Wonthella Supa IGA best in the State

Geraldton’s much loved and newly renovated Wonthella Supa IGA has cleaned up at the IGA State awards night.

Wonthella received three department awards for meat, grocery and customer service and managed to take out the top prize of Store of Year, making them the best Supa IGA in the state. Manager Leanne Merendino was also celebrated, receiving the ‘Rising Star’ Award.

‘It’s fantastic for the team out there to be recognised for all their hard work,’ said Operations Manager Stuart Bain. ‘They were up against the best from around WA. Leanne has such a passion for her store and serving her customers and this is reflected in her whole team.’

Wonthella Supa IGA was reopened in 1974 by the Rigter family. Long time manager Eileen Jones became a favourite with the locals, before she passed the baton over to Leanne in 2011. It underwent a complete transformation last year with staff working overtime to create the new look you see today.

2016 marks the first year that a RegionalSupa IGA has won the award. The management crew head to Queensland in July where they will be in the running for the best store in the nation.

Today Blayney tabled a petition to keep Greenough Axe Murderer locked up

Blayney tables Axe Murderer Petition with 2548 signatures

Geraldton MLA Ian Blayney presented a petition with 2548 signatures to the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly today, protesting against the parole of the Greenough Axe Murderer.

“I will be following up the presentation of the petition with a letter to the Attorney General, once again conveying the message that William Patrick Mitchell should never be released from jail.

“This petition has already been signed by about 10 per cent of Geraldton’s adult population and there are still more signatures to come.

“It is the second time I have petitioned on this matter. The people of Geraldton have again reacted strongly.

“Clearly the community doesn’t want this person released from prison,” said Mr Blayney

Geraldton is the first place in WA with a certified adult change facility for people with a disability

Council’s ongoing commitment to improve access and inclusion throughout the City has resulted in Geraldton being the first City in the state to receive accreditation for a Type 2 Changing Place facility.

The recently refurbished Town Beach toilet block located in the Youth Precinct offers a clean and secure Changing Place for people with disability who need space and assistance to use the bathroom when they are away from home.

City of Greater Geraldton Mayor Shane Van Styn said the Town Beach toilet block is one of very few certified Changing Place facilities in the nation.

“Every day there are thousands of Australians with disability are confined to their homes due to inappropriate toilet facilities as they require assistance to use the bathroom,” he said.

“Across the country there are only a handful of facilities that meet the Changing Place’s requirements for certification and we are very proud to be the first Local Government one in WA.”

The City received $100,000 in grant funding from the Disability Services Commission, administered by the Western Australian Local Government Association for the refurbishment of the toilet block.

Geraldton is not only the first local government to receive accreditation, the Town Beach toilet block is also the first facility in a network of Changing Places whose construction has been joint funded.

The video below is from the launch in January of the Youth Precinct and new change facilities.

Youth Precinct

Introducing the new City of Greater Geraldton "Youth Precinct". It opens this Australia Day. We headed down there this afternoon to have a look and speak with a few folk from CGG about the new foreshore addition. It looks like a lot of fun for all age groups. There's a rage cage, some very fun looking electronic games, foosball tables, table tennis, and more. It will be open each day from 6:30am until 10:30pm. Sports equipment is available from the Visitor Centre with a $5 deposit. There is a new "Changing Places" toilet facility, that provides unprecedented facilities for restricted mobility members of our community, a first for WA. A beach access ramp for wheelchairs is also on its way. Stay tuned later in the year when the rest of the multi user facility is finished. CGG have called the multi user facility and Youth Precinct the "jewell in the crown" for our foreshore. It certainly is a welcome addition to our city.

This baby lost his mother, and now needs our help

This is Kobi Rumble.

Kobi lost his mother in November 2015 when a truck veered into the path of the vehicle his mother was driving on NWCH near Drummond Cove.

Kobi was in the car, but survived the accident, sustaining only minor injuries.

But growing up without Mum is only one of the challenges that lies in front of young Kobi.

Kobi was born 12 weeks premature, with a condition known as fibula hemimelia (more info). This means his ankle and foot bones aren’t developed and he requires ongoing treatment.

From the Go-fund-Me page set up for Kobi:

"Whilst the option from specialists at PMH is amputation, the Paley Institute in Florida USA treat his condition but to get Kobi and his Nan across we need to raise around $255,000."

Amazing feedback from children's event in Spalding Park run by Lions Club

What a beautiful day for our Children's Party today, had so many thank us for putting this on again. To make so many parents, grandparents and children this happy just absolutely makes my heart sing..... We had about 300 under 12's attend, and the weather really turned it on... The trains ran non stop (all 4 of them) and the kiddies just loved them.

Debie (the fairy) was painting non stop for the entire time she was there, and she did some wonderful painting and thanks to all the little people for patiently waiting in line and Mums and Dads too.

Hop on a Pony had 2 adorable ponies working their gorgeous hearts out, they love their work ( Jai told me one is 20 years old and the other is 15) I was so so tempted to pat one, but given my past experience with allergies to horses I thought better of it... Our trusty Lions had noses to the grindstone, and our vollies did a fabulous job to lend a hand, so thank you to you all for a job well done.

Sharon the fabulous icecream lady was almost melting at the end of the day, thank you once again Sharon. you did great.
