Is this the LARGEST collection of tins in Australia?

Bob and Margaret, also known as the Tin Heads, have been collecting tins for some time, they first opened to the public in 2009

This was the amazing tally just the other day

Then another collection from Alice Springs they purchased arrived

new additions

There were a few doubles, but plenty of new additions. Looks like the collection might be close to 7000

Not bad for a couple of pensioners who donate the proceeds to the heart foundation

Want to check out this overwhelming tin collection? It is open to the public every second Sunday of the month or by appointment. Entry is by gold coin donation and group bookings are welcome. Donations go to the Heart Foundation of WA. Call 0428 383 208 for more information.

Anyone else in Geraldton woken by this?

Sent in to Everything Geraldton by a light sleeper:

do the train drivers have to blast their horns at 2.30am , 3am and about 4am and wake everyone up during the night ? he must wake up thousands of people doing this every night. i live a fair way away and i hear it. i'm a light sleeper so those people who live closer to the railway line must get blasted out of their beds every night ! they never used to do it only now and again but just lately you hear a long blast as he passes through the town going and coming from the port.

Seniors and Pensioners won't be happy about this

WA Seniors Cost of Living Rebate to be halved; Country Age Pension Fuel Card value to increase It’s a bittersweet day for regional WA Seniors and Pensioners.

Premier Colin Barnett announced this morning (Tuesday 24 June) that from July 1 the WA Seniors Cost of Living Rebate will be reduced from $163.90 to $82 for singles and $245.90 to $123 for couples.

The change is a flow-on effect of a $25 million cut to concession funding by the Abbott Liberal government.

The Cost of Living Rebate is available to WA Seniors Card holders who work less than 25 hours per week. It is the largest payment cycle ever undertaken by the Western Australian government, with 288,000 applications processed for 2013.

The Cost of Living Rebate was introduced in 2009 and for many is considered a lifeline.

However it’s not all bad news for WA’s regional pensioners. It was also announced that from July 1, the Country Age Pension Fuel Card value will increase from $500 to $550.

The Country Age Pension Fuel Card is available to a person or couples in WA receiving a Centrelink Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, Wife Pension or Widow B Pension or a Department of Veterans’ Affairs Service Pension, Social Security Age Pension or Income Support Supplement. It can be used in assisting to purchase fuel or taxi fares.

The Country Age Pension Fuel Card was also introduced in 2009. More than 45,000 pensioners have accessed the scheme each year.

If you were concerned about ammonium nitrate in Kojarena, you can rest easy for now

Council have rejected, again, the proposal to store ammonium nitrate, a dangerous good, at Kojarena. The proposal was put forward by Blue Energy Explosives. Several members of the community reached out to Everything Geraldton during the week expressing concern of the storage of the highly dangerous substance in Kojarena.

At the beginning of the meeting, members of the public, including neighbouring farmers, expressed serious concerns over the proposal .
Cr Van Styn said he inspected the property and despite the fact that there was the potential for more jobs, he believed the fact that the buffer zone encroached on someone else's property, as well as other factors, made the proposal unacceptable. Phil Melling, director of sustainable communities, said the buffer zone was completely on the proponent's property, according to their submission.
Mayor Ian Carpenter said he believed more public feedback was needed before considering the proposal.
Councillor Jerry Clune said at least three meetings have already been held with the proponent, and they had been largely difficult to contact on the matter, rejecting the notion more consultation was needed with Blue Energy Explosives, and calling on his peers to support his motion to reject Blue Energy Explosive's proposal outright.
The vote was 10/4 to reject the proposal.

Do NOT fall for this scam

Thanks so much Salome for giving everyone a warning regarding this:

Just a heads up I just had a phone call from people claiming to be telstra saying that they could reduce my monthly bills because I have been a customer for years and they valued customer loyalty. All I had to do was provide them with my license, Medicare card and bank details. I rang telstra back and asked for clarification and as I suspected it wasn't them. Please be careful who you give your info out to and if it sounds too good to be true it always is!

If you could wear a "Onesie" to work or school, would you?

Strathalbyn Christian College students recently had the great fortune of being about to wear perhaps the worlds most comfy item of clothing to school, as part of a fundraising efforts for the college. Anita Kirkbright, Development Officer at Strath said that the Student Representative Council raised $2072.89 on Onesie Day, from donations and the sale of hot Milo and a sausage sizzle.

"This was a fantastic effort by the whole college community. We're very proud of the students for caring and organising the fundraising event to help a college family who is in need."

There's homophobia, then there's this

20140624-095341-35621040.jpg

Opera Australia has finally succumbed to world-wide outrage and cancelled the contract of Tamar Iveri, Georgian opera singer who was due to perform in their production of Otello.

Ms Iveri has recently made world headlines for the aggressive homophobic statements she made in a letter that was published on her Facebook page, supporting an attack on Georgian LGBT protesters that happened in May 2013.

Many people were seriously injured during the attack, to which the Georgian President responded, “We have been disgraced, what will Europe and the world think of us?”

The President’s stance prompted Ms Iveri to write him an open letter criticising his ‘bending to the West’.

“Often, in certain cases, it is necessary to break the jaws in order to be appreciated as a nation in the future,” she wrote.

“I was quite proud of the fact that Georgian society spat at the parade.

“Please, stop vigerous attempts to bring West’s ‘fecal masses’ in the mentality of the people by means of propaganda.

“If you ignore it today…. tomorrow they will demand same-sex marriages, the day after tomorrow they will require rights for adoption. And I really do not want Georgia, a place that I am always happy to visit, to resemble certain blocks of Amsterdam.”

(Read her entire letter in English here.)

The Georgian LGBT community translated Iveri’s shocking homophobic letter into English, sending it to the National Opera of Paris who cancelled her performances. Iveri begun offering half-hearted apologies to the LGBT community, which were taken as an attempt to save her career rather than a show of real remorse.

Opera Australia has been under huge pressure over the past few days to cancel Iveri’s Australian contract, with social media campaigns condemning them across the globe.

The satirical Facebook page Pauline Pantsdown garnered huge support for their open letter to Opera Australia, which stated,

Dear Opera Australia,

As much has happened over the last 24 hours, you may need a summary, as the proven inadequacy of your initial response demands that you now take responsible action on this matter.

On Saturday morning you made a decision to support Tamar Iveri merely on the basis of her response statement, after her advocation of violence against GLBTI people.

Her response statement has now been shown to be unequivocally false.

Unfortunately for Opera Australia, they delayed their decision to release Iveri from her contract until yesterday, which has led to widespread criticism from those who believe she should never have been allowed a working permit in Australia in the first place.

Opera Australia published this statement to their Facebook page yesterday:

Opera Australia confirms soprano Ms Tamar Iveri will not be performing in Otello.

Opera Australia has reached agreement with Ms Iveri to immediately release her from her contract with the company.

Ms Iveri and her husband have both made public statements in the last 48 hours with regards to comments attributed to Ms Iveri.

Ms Iveri has unreservedly apologised for those comments and views.

Opera Australia believes the views as stated to be unconscionable.

A petition on change.org, asking for Iveri’s Australian working visa to be revoked gathered 4600 signatures in just three days.

Ms Iveri has recently changed her Facebook profile picture and cover photo to images that say, “Peace, Love and Harmony”, but she is continuing to receive a lot of criticism on her page.
