Beware of needles

Everything Geraldton has been getting an increased number of reports of needles being found dumped around town lately.

This pic was sent in by a reader last week: "Found at the path at sunset beach near the caravan park."

It might be a good reminder to have a chat with the kids about what to do if they find something like this on the ground.

What to do for your child’s next birthday party

Is your child’s birthday coming up? Have you started planning a party for them but are stuck on ideas for fun filled activities? A child’s birthday party is a day they look forward to all year, so naturally, you want to throw them the best party possible. But planning a party for young children can be challenging and often, it becomes more stressful than what it should be. Several businesses in Geraldton are here to help and can make your child’s next party a day to remember.

Hop-Upon-A-Pony:

Lets face it, at some point during our childhood, we wanted to have a pony at our birthday party more than anything…even the boys, I’m sure. And your children most likely relish the idea as well. Pony rides have been a huge hit at parties for many years and the only flaw in this otherwise perfect form of party entertainment is that your children wont want them to leave. Hop-Upon-A-Pony is a family owned & operated business based in Deepdale, Geraldton. They offer pony rides for children’s birthday parties for all age groups, which can be held in your very own backyard or at a park. They can even dress their ponies up to a theme of your child’s choice. You can book one pony for 2 hours for $180 or two ponies for 2 hours for $250.

Amberland Inflatables:

Having a bouncy castle in your own backyard will keep the kids happy and you’ll be the talk of the town (or should I say, in the classroom), being known as “the coolest parents ever”. Bouncy castles are a great form of entertainment where the fun doesn’t stop. Amberland Inflatables, based in Boyanup, travel around Western Australia during the school holidays and have a wide range of inflatables from giant water slides to small bouncy castles for the backyard. Prices vary in terms of what sized inflatable you're after and bookings are based on when Amberland are travelling to Geraldton, so it is recommended to book a couple of months in advance.

Aquarena:

The Aquarena has always been a favourite at children's parties with their many different facilities available to hire. The Aquarena has giant inflatable fun factories for hire, including the BIFF, SMIFF and WIFF. If inflatables aren’t your child’s cup of tea, their Tarzan Rope is also a popular choice in the pool. Don't let the cold weather ruin your child's special day. If it's a bit nippy, their Leisure Pool, which is heated to 29 degrees and contains the 47 metre Flume Slide is guaranteed not to disappoint. To find out more about their prices and availability, visit their website.

It’s All Sorted:

If you don’t have the time to organise your child’s next party, or just don’t know where to start, phone It’s All Sorted, who can do all the hard work for you. It’s All Sorted specialise in a variety of organisational services, including business administration, fundraisers, organisational assistance, promotion assistance, event set up, children’s parties and much more. See what they can do for your next party by giving them a call today.

Works to begin on Wonthella Skate Park extension

Outline sketch of proposed works at Wonthella Skate Park.

The local skating community will be able to put their skills to the test after the Wonthella Skate Park undergoes a refurbishment and extension.

The skate park will be fenced off from Monday, 20 April as construction takes place. The planned extension to the skate park will cover an area of approximately 700m2 and will include various new elements for both beginners and established skateboarders.

The various new transitions and obstacles will complement the existing skate park structure, with the existing section to undergo a considerable refurbishment.

The completed skate park will include a number of tried and tested features such as grind rails, ramps, quarterpipe runs, banks, ledges and steps.

A significant area of the new extension will be utilised to house a bowled area which will be an entirely new feature of the skate park.

Mayor Ian Carpenter said the extensions were a result of feedback from the community.

“We listened to what the community had to say and we have taken their suggestions on board with the design of the newly refurbished and extended skate park,” he said.

“Local youngsters have been rallying for this project for quite some time and we are happy to see it come to fruition.

“The finished product promises to be a big hit with the local skating community.”

CONVIC Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract for the project and the business has an extensive background in skate park construction.

The award-winning team are one of the leading contractors in this field and will be utilising a number of local contractors to provide secondary services during construction.

CONVIC have built prized skate parks throughout Australia and the world, including Australia’s largest skate park in South Hedland. CONVIC have a swag of awards under their belt including awards for their skate park construction in Fremantle and Singapore.

Beresford Electrical Services have been separately contracted to provide and install the new floodlighting.

Works will begin on April 20 2015 and completion is expected by June 30. During this period, the entire skate park will be closed to the general public.

Replica of the old Tenindewa schoolhouse

Tony Critch and the community have made a replica of the old Tenindewa schoolhouse in the form of a shed that can be used as a picnic area. 60 to 70 people rolled up Sat 11th to see an Aboriginal lady give a talk on her early days as a kid, Tony Critch gave a talk on the history of the school and early settlers and Jenny Critch opened the replica. Just great to have Tony Critch and the community to preserve this history. - Ben Crosthwaite

Ways to recognise and prevent a computer infection

A computer virus is a program or programming code that infects your computer by self-replicating and infecting files throughout your computers system. There are many forms of computer infections, such as Ransomware, Web Browser Hijacking, Adware, your common Malware programs and much more. Many of these infections try (and in many cases, succeed) to access your personal information, erase data and send mass spam emails to infect other hosts, although it depends from case to case.

Rohan Norris from Norris & Hyde IT has dealt with hundreds of computers and laptops infected with viruses and say it's an easy trap to fall victim to. Many people aren't aware what they're clicking on or downloading is actually malware. Rohan has shared with us what to look out for and how to prevent a computer infection.

Ransomware: Crypto Locker/Wall:

The major variant that is going around right now is the Crypto Locker/Wall which can infect your computer once a spam email has been opened. A common infected email going around right now claim they are from companies like the ATO or postal services stating that your documents are attached. Once the attachment is opened, it will encrypt all of your files and you will be held ransom to pay for the decryption key. Rohan explains that once your files have been encrypted, you will notice a pop-up on your desktop explaining exactly what has happened and requesting payment in the form of 'bitcoins'. Once payment is received, they will supposedly supply a decryption key to unlock all your data.

The best way to prevent this happening is not to open any emails from an unknown sender and to be very cautious when opening attachments or clicking on URL links. The most common giveaway is when the attachments are zipped (.zip). Even if the email says that there is a document/PDF/Excel attached, pay close attention to the title of the attachment. Because chances are, it will report as something similar to ".doc.zip". As soon as the attachment is opened, all files on your computer will then be encrypted.

Web Browser Hijacking:

If your usual search engine is Google for example, and you suddenly notice that it has changed to Ask.com, Delta Search or even Yahoo, it’s very likely that your normal web browser has been hijacked and all your web search results won’t be legitimate. Many of these search results show a large amount of advertising before showing anything legitimate. For example, if you’re searching for a dog bed online, the first 5-10 results will be advertisements that have been integrated with your hijacked search engine and all 5-10 advertisements will be infected with malware.

This is a very easy virus to fall victim to, especially when downloading or updating software. Java is a good example. Although Java is a legitimate and safe program to use, you can infect your computer once the installation is complete. Once installed, you’ll be presented with several ‘tick boxes’, which many of us do not read. The most common tick box to cause web browser hijacking is “do you want to change your search/home page over to Ask.com?”. These boxes are often already ticked, so if you don’t uncheck boxes like this, your normal web page will be hijacked and you may fall victim to advertisements that contain malware. In order to prevent this from happening, pay close attention to what you’re downloading or updating and make sure you read what boxes you are ticking or accepting.

Malware:

  • As mentioned before with Crypto Locker/Wall, do not open emails with unusual subjects, even from your friends. For example, if you get an email and the subject is “take a look at this it will make you LOL” from an old friend or work mate, it's more than likely malware and it’s very easy to identify. Sadly, once a computer is infected, it will spread through to other hosts via spamming emails. And chances are, the person doesn’t even know their computer is infected. So if you receive any emails from someone who you don’t normally talk to on a regular basis or the subject seems ‘off’, do not open any link or attachments they have sent. The best thing you can do is reply and let the person know you have received their email and their computer is infected. It is safe to open and reply to the email, but do not open any attachments or click on any links.

  • Another giveaway that your computer is infected with malware is an unusual or excessive amount of toolbars in your Internet Browser that you have never seen or used before. This can be caused through clicking or downloading fake advertisements and software. Once your computer is infected with this type of malware, it has the ability to manipulate your search engine and add additional toolbars that can do more harm to your computer if clicked on.

  • If an antivirus alert that you have never seen before pops up on your computer, do not click on it. A classic line is “Warning—your computer is infected! They may cause critical system failure. Click here to get available software”. This is a virus that leads you into thinking your computer is infected and to perform a ‘scan check’, which is actually an infected file. It is relatively easy to recognise a fake virus alert when it pops up out of the blue and you have never seen it before.

Unfortunately, some computer infections cause devastating effects and can wipe months even years' worth of important data off your system, access your personal information or worse, completely wipe your computer. Fortunately, Norris & Hyde IT have several types of antivirus software available to protect your computer.

Avast Free Antivirus: Avast is an antivirus/spyware protection program that continuously updates its database of virus definitions to maximise protection for Windows, Android and Apple MacOS. Avast is free for 12 months for home users and they also have paid subscriptions for greater protection.

Trend Micro Security: Trend Micro Security provides comprehensive, multiple device privacy protection against malware and blocks sites trying to trick you into downloading harmful content. This program is perfect for families where multiple devices are used under one roof. Trend Micro Security protects both Android and iOS Mobile Devices. The cost for Trend Micro Security ranges from $49.95 to $199.90 per year, depending on how many devices you want protected.

Trend Micro Worry Free Business Security: This software provides complete user protection designed for businesses and protects employees. Trend Micro Worry Free protects everyone in the office and safeguards your email, web activity, file sharing and more. Trend Micro Worry Free pricing is dependent on the end users computer systems, ie. Server configuration and total amount of computers.

If you believe your computer is infected with malware, speak to Rohan and the team at Norris & Hyde IT who provide fast on-site service to anywhere throughout WA. Norris & Hyde IT can supply and install antivirus software to prevent infections, as well as professional backup systems for recovery purposes if the worst case scenario does happen.

Woman brandishes Machete in street altercation, neighbours fed up

Residents say they're getting fed up with the behaviour of some of their neighbours after an altercation on a Utakarra street over money resulted in a woman being arrested.

Police say at about 2pm on Tuesday 7 April 2015 an altercation occurred between two females on Archer Street, Utakarra.

As a result of the altercation one of the females, the victim, located a sum of money on the street which the other female claimed to belong to her. The victim continued to walk to her house with the money.

Police say that the female walked to her own residence nearby where she retrieved a machete.

She then returned to the victim’s address where she stood on the driveway brandishing the machete, hitting the fence and wall with it, demanding that she return the money. The victim responded to the female’s requests and handed the money over.

Police attended the area and subsequently arrested the 33 year old woman from Utakarra. She will appear at the Geraldton Magistrates Court at a later date charged with possessing a controlled weapon in a manner likely to cause fear.

A nearby neighbour complained saying he felt like he was living in a war zone. He said he wanted to move away from the area because the Department of Housing would do nothing about the current situation with their tenants. As a Dept of Housing tenant himself he says he may have to wait up to two years before he can relocate.

16 year old on moped hit by car - witnesses wanted

16 year old Jason after the incident

A 16 year old who says he was hit by a car while riding his moped on Brand Highway yesterday is reaching out to the community in the hope of finding anyone who might have witnessed the incident.

Jason says he was travelling along the Brand Highway heading South towards Wandina at approximately 11am yesterday 9/4/15 near Sydney street when a small vehicle turned into him.

"I was travelling straight at the speed limit and they cut across the road hitting me," he says. "I hit the front of it flew a couple of metres."

Jason says he was in a fair amount of shock and can't confirm the exact colour and make of the car.

Jason says the driver and passenger of the car stopped and helped him off the road, said they'll get a ute for the moped, then just drove off.

"There was road works going ahead and the lads working gave me a hand getting me off the road and taking the moped home, one worker named Matt called the ambulance for me."

He says the driver and passenger of the car were both male aged approx 18-20.

Jason was taken to hospital where he was treated for his injuries. He spoke with Police while in hospital and informed them that he believes he knows the passenger of the vehicle through mutual friends. "I was going to message him on Facebook about the incident and he blocked me."

Jason is hoping someone witnessed the incident and asks that if they did to please come forward.

Geraldton Police can be contacted on 99234555 (option 4).
