Clipper round the world yacht race unlikely to return to Geraldton

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, an international yachting event, has visited Geraldton twice, in 2009 and 2011. But after being denied funding from Eventscorp it is unlikely to return to Geraldton any time soon.

Much beloved by the sporting community, and a great opportunity to showcase Geraldton on the world stage, the City of Greater Geraldton had hoped to see the race return to Geraldton again for 2013/14 and 2015/16 races, with Geraldton being the only stopover "host city" in WA, and also a sponsor of a yacht in both races.

The City submitted an application to Eventscorp on 7 February 2013 seeking funding of $1.1 million over four years to assist with the costs of hosting the event, however Eventscorp sent an email on 18 April 2013 indicating that the application was unsuccessful.

Council is yet to vote on formally rejecting the offer from Clipper, however with budgetary issues already a big deal in Geraldton, an extra $1 million to host the race is going to be a little difficult to justify.

Community members can discuss the issue at the upcoming Council Agenda Forum this Tuesday evening 18th June 2013 at Council Chambers. The item will likely be voted on Tuesday June 25th 2013.
