Owner crashes vehicle and pretends it was stolen - Police

An interesting twist in the mystery of this morning's vehicle roll over near Eagle Boys.

Just after midnight on the morning of Monday 22 July 2013 a white Nissan utility left Durlacher Street near Maitland Street, Geraldton. The vehicle rolled over and damaged a gas main, causing a significant gas leak and came to rest on it’s side in the car park of Eagle Boy’s Pizza.

Upon police arrival the vehicle’s occupants were not located.

Police blocked off Durlacher Street to all traffic for a number of hours whilst Alinta Gas Emergency crews secured the gas leak and made the area safe.

At about 7am this morning the involved vehicle was reported as stolen by the owner.

An investigation was undertaken into this incident and as a result a 20 year old Mt Tarcoola man, the owner of the vehicle, was arrested and ultimately charged with a number of offences. He will attend Geraldton Magistrates Court on Thursday 25 July 2013 to answer the following charges;

  1. Dangerous Driving.
  2. Driver fail to stop after crash (property damage).
  3. Driver fail to report an incident in which property was damaged.
  4. Creating false belief.

Police will allege that the driver of the vehicle at the time of the crash was in fact the owner of the vehicle, and that the driver and another passenger fled the scene following the crash.
