Clean greenwaste is essential

With the festive season upon us, the City of Greater Geraldton would like to remind the public to do the right thing with their Christmas waste. Or maybe make memories, not garbage with a gift of tickets to a show or day out or donation to a charity of choice.

The festive season is great time for celebrating with friends and family, and it is also the time of year when we show ourselves as a wasteful society and the amount of waste generated goes up markedly. So if you are planning to take domestic rubbish to the tip over the break please observe tipping directions and follow the signs.

There has been a recent incident where a member of the community visited the City’s Meru Waste Disposal facility at Narngulu and not tipped rubbish at the appropriate location as directed. Domestic waste was dumped in the greenwaste section and apart from breaching the facility’s licence conditions, this cross contamination costs ratepayers money as it needs to be extracted.

Greenwaste is processed by City contractors for sale to residents as mulch and is also used on City parks and gardens. If domestic waste contaminates greenwaste it becomes a danger to residents and pets when items such as glass and syringes hidden in the rubbish end up dispersed with the product and the mulch placed in gardens.

The Meru Landfill facility will be open every day from 7.30am to 4.30pm across the Christmas, New Year break apart from Christmas Day, December 25 and New Year’s Day, January 1.
