Thunderstorm Alert for Mid West

The following alert has been issued by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

Continue to take action with thunderstorms coming in parts of the Midwest Gascoyne

Thursday 14 January 2016 - 5:58 PM

*The warning area for this storm has been reduced in size

If you live in an area bounded by Dongara to Mount Magnet to Meekatharra to Three Rivers to Mount Augustus to Overlander Roadhouse to Kalbarri to Dongara you should continue to take action and stay safe with more thunderstorms to come.

This does not include Geraldton, Northampton, Kalbarri and Meekatharra. This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous.
WHAT TO DO:
• If outside find safe shelter away from trees, powerlines, storm water drains and streams.
• Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
• Unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning.
• If there is flooding, create your own sandbags by using pillow cases filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home.
IF DRIVING:
• Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current.
• Slow down, turn your lights on and keep a safe distance from other drivers.
• Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen powerlines and loose debris.
• If it is raining heavily and you cannot see, pull over and park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears.
• Take care in areas that have been flooded and be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged.
Take care in western parts of the Midwest Gascoyne
The severe weather warning for the area west of Overlander Roadhouse to Kalbarri and coastal parts between Kalbarri and Dongara has been cancelled, but people in these areas should take care when going outside and assessing damage.

WHAT TO DO:
DFES has these tips to help you and your family stay safe once the storm has passed:

• Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
• Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
• Keep clear of fallen powerlines, they are dangerous and should always be treated as live.
• Assess your home, car and property for damage.
• Check to see if your neighbour needs help.
• If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs.
• If your home has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
People are being urged to do what they can to help themselves, if it is safe to do so, before calling the SES for assistance.
WHAT EMERGENCY SERVICES ARE DOING:
Emergency services are currently monitoring the situation.
ROAD CLOSURES:
Road information may also be available by calling Main Roads WA on 138 138 or visiting www.mainroads.wa.gov.au
THUNDERSTORM DETAILS:
As at 4.27pm on Thursday 14 January 2016 the Bureau of Meteorology advises that there is a risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and continuing into the evening. At 4:00pm satellite imagery showed a line of possibly severe thunderstorms inland from the coast from north of Northampton to Overlander Roadhouse and moving slowly eastwards.
Storms may be accompanied by damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfal which may lead to flash flooding. Storms could cause damage to homes and property.
The overall weather pattern is not unusual for this time of year but severe weather may occur in some parts of the warning area.

IF YOU NEED ASSISTANCE:

• If your home has been badly damaged by a storm, call the SES on 132 500
• In a life threatening situation call 000

After a storm State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers make temporary repairs to homes that have been badly damaged, such as roofs that have been ripped off or large fallen trees on homes and cars. Please contact your insurance company to organise permanent.

And the winner of the Best Christmas Lights is…

Matt, Daneale and Zara Buckley of Kidz Retreat.

Kidz Retreat was very honoured to win the $500.00 from S & K Electrical. Their main reason for putting a light display up is for their daughter Zara, and were overwhelmed with the response from the community.

Matt and Daneale have decided to add another $500 from their own pocket and donate this and their $500 winnings to a child friendly organisation. They and their staff will put together a list of possible organisations and will get the parents who use Kidz Retreat to vote on which one they think it should go towards.

Congratulations Kidz Retreat for a great Christmas Lights Display and well done on your wonderful gesture of passing on the winnings to a worthy organisation.

Letter to Geraldton community from Salvos following robbery

To the people of the Geraldton community,

We are writing this letter to thank the community for the response to the break in at our Salvation Army facility just before Christmas. As many of you know, the Salvation Army Geraldton Corps experienced a break and enter on the 20th of December. When I arrived to check the alarm, I was confronted by a masked intruder wielding a crow bar who stole a large amount of the donated toys and food we were preparing to hand out at during the Christmas period to families in need around Geraldton. Aside from the theft, a significant amount of damage was done to our facility. The ongoing repairs have meant that the Salvation Army Geraldton Family Crisis centre has had to close until the damage is repaired. We apologise to the needy who would be looking to us for assistance in the coming weeks. We are working as hard as we can to get our facility up and running again so that we can be there for you in your time of need.

After the break in, the Geraldton Community rallied around us, with a constant stream of donations of food, toys and money coming in over the days following. It is due to these donations that we were able to maintain and indeed increase our assistance to needy families this Christmas.

We would like to thank all those who made donations, rang with offers of support and assistance, as well as the well-wishers who along with most members of the community voiced their sadness and disgust at this incident and those responsible. We would also like to thank particularly the following individuals and businesses who made significant contributions to our efforts, first amongst those being, Rigter’s IGA group for their $5000.00 donation.

They’re community spirit is wonderful and we are so grateful for their incredible support. We would also like to thank Mayor Shane Van Styn, MLCs Paul Brown and Darren West, Sun City Security, as well as all the members of the media who helped us publicise this incident. I would especially like to thank the team at Everything Geraldton who helped us get the word out almost straight away, and other members of the local media including Arthur Muhl at ABC Mid-West, Tasha Tania at GWN7 Regional, and the Geraldton Guardian newspaper. There are probably many more we have missed but to all those that brought donations in or those who made contact offering assistance and support, we are deeply appreciative of you and your efforts.

Our Christmas efforts this year were a success despite this incident. We were able to assist all those that presented for support at Christmas, and no child missed out this year. We are proud of the response from the Geraldton Community, and we pledge to continue, with the community’s ongoing support, to be there for those that are struggling in the Mid-West.

Blessings,

Lieutenants Jeff and Jacqui Milkins and the team at the Salvation Army Geraldton Corps

Warning from local after attempted theft in car park

This week [at a local supermarket], my mother had just finished putting her shopping into the car and popped her purse on top when a pregnant lady approached her in the carpark. The lady asked my mum if she could go into the shop and buy her a few things as she didn't have any money.

My mum locked her car (forgetting to grab her purse) went into the shop and told the nearest supervisor. He and another employee came outside with her, to find the lady AND about 8 other people were about to break into her car and steal her groceries and her purse.

PLEASE be warned about this method that is being used to distract you. Thank you

The best coffee in Geraldton

If you’re a coffee lover, you will have your steadfast opinion about where to go in our fair city to find the best beans.  As a cappuccino fan myself, I was more than happy to hunt out the best in Geraldton.

So, first of all, what makes a great coffee?  Everyone I asked this question generally said the same things.  Must not be bitter, not too milky and never, ever burnt.  After drinking a fair amount of caffeine around town, I realised that this task was going to be harder than I thought.  There are tons of great coffee places around, it just depends what vibe you’re after really.

If you’re looking for a cappuccino with a view, Skeeta’s wins hands down.  Good coffee overlooking that beautiful Geraldton harbour.  Definitely not disappointing.  Grab a takeaway and go for a walk down the Marina in the sunshine.

Want that beach vibe?  The Jaffle Shack Café on the foreshore opened recently, and you will love it.  With the distressed wood and grassy space for the kids plus a range of jaffles and snacks it’s a great place to chill after a swim.  The best part, for you diehard caffeine lovers, the coffee is amazing.

If you have toddlers in tow like I always do, Two Foreshore not only does great coffee, but a range of healthy snacks, and they will even deliver your cuppa to the playground for you.  Plenty of room for prams and mother’s groups too.

Culinary HQ is an excellent place to stop in and grab a takeaway on your lunchbreak and Salt Dish serves an amazing, healthy breakfast with your morning brew.

But where in town serves hands down the best coffee?

This was a tough task but I found it at the very last place I visited, which was Quiet Life Specialty Coffee.  I’d never been there but had heard only good things, and let’s just say, I was super impressed.  It has a funky vibe and friendly staff.  My cappuccino was amazing and the sneaky cronut was tasty too.  What’s a cronut, you ask?  Well it’s a croissant crossed with a donut, and you need it in your life.

So, the best coffee in Geraldton, a harder task than I had imagined, but one I had lots of fun researching.  It’s great to see so many places with such different atmospheres, and that’s why I love this city.

Mark Turner's Response

Mark Turner got in touch with us after someone published something claiming to be suspicious of him, describing him and naming him and his publicly naming his employer. The person who published this did not bother to contact the business first. We tried to contact the person who published the original post, but they did not respond. Everything Geraldton deleted the post as there appeared to be nothing to substantiate the claims made. It's worth keeping in mind that you are legally accountable for anything you publish and can be sued for defamation, even if you only publish on social media.

Here is Mark's response:

Yes you're right, my name is Mark. My full name is Mark Turner.
I have been newly employed by Batavia Concrete. Geraldton WA.
I just sold my successful Hunting film entertainment production company over east & have left the Northern Territory a few months ago, setting off on an around Australia working road trip, in my white twin cab Toyota Hilux 4X4, fitted with aluminium tray, roof rack, tool box, trailblazer fridge & dog box for safe transportation of my Border Collie cross pig hunting dog. (I do like a good yarn like most Territorians) I'm a light drinker & I do NOT do drugs of any kind.

I'm spending Christmas & New Years with very close friend in Geraldton.
I'm happy for anybody to approach me & have a chat at anytime.

I am very happy for anybody to get in contact with me in regards to anything they may be concerned with via my Facebook page. Mark Turner.

Here is a good boar my Border Collie cross caught while I was hunting a private property with Chapman Valley farmer Josh Gould.

Advice to Dick Smith customers following receivership

Consumer Protection has issued advice to Dick Smith customers who may be affected by the company’s recent placement into voluntary administration and receivership.

Customers affected include those:

  • who wish to redeem a gift card;
  • have paid either partly or fully for goods yet to be delivered;
  • have entered into a lay-by agreement and paid a deposit;
  • have a store credit note which has not yet been used;
  • purchased an extended warranty issued by Dick Smith; or
  • bought a product that is faulty.

Acting Commissioner for Consumer Protection David Hillyard said the Dick Smith stores will not be honouring gift cards and deposits will not be refunded.

“Customers who hold gift cards should contact the Voluntary Administrator as soon as possible to register their claim as an unsecured creditor of Dick Smith,” Mr Hillyard said.

“Customers who paid for gift cards on their credit or debit card should contact their credit card provider and request a chargeback as soon as possible. This option will not be available if the ‘cheque’ or ‘savings’ options were selected at the time of purchase.

“Customers who paid deposits or paid fully for goods that have yet to be delivered should contact the store about the possibility of receiving the goods. If the goods are not likely to be supplied, customers should make a chargeback claim if paid by credit card or register as an unsecured creditor if paid by cash or EFTPOS.

“Customers who purchased an extended warranty issued by Dick Smith should contact the Voluntary Administrators. Extended warranty contracts issued by a third party may still be honoured.

“Those who have faulty products may have difficulty in getting a repair or refund by dealing with the store direct, so they should also contact the Voluntary Administrators for further advice. Alternatively, customers can contact the manufacturer direct.

“Under the Australian Consumer Law, consumers have a right to a refund, replacement or repair if the product is faulty and this should be provided by either the retailer or manufacturer.

“As the retailer is continuing to trade under the control of the receiver and this is considered a new entity, consumers who purchase products after the appointment yesterday are legally entitled to their full rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Customers should contact us if they have any issues about getting a remedy if goods are faulty or don’t perform as expected.”

Affected customers should immediately register as an unsecured creditor with the Voluntary Administrators, McGrath Nicol, who have set up a hotline with Link Market Services – 1300 853 481 – or email dicksmith@linkmarketservices.com.au. More information can be found on the McGrath Nicol website: www.mcgrathnicol.com.

The receiver is Ferrier Hodgson – www.ferrierhodgson.com.

Consumer information has been posted by the ACL regulators on the ASIC website. Consumers requiring further assistance and advice can contact Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or consumer@commerce.wa.gov.au.

Regarding retailers rejecting "bra money"

The ABC Midwest ran a story today on shops in Geraldton rejecting money kept in people's brassiere. The story was published on the ABC's national Facebook page, and thus gathered remarks from around the country. ABC claimed that a "growing" number of businesses are putting the sign up.

I've worked in retail for many years, and experienced people handing over bra money lots of times. Allow me to share my experience.

  • I don't recall the money every being "sweaty and gross".
  • Often the woman has children with her, and carrying the cash there seems to be quite practical with her hands otherwise full.
  • The first time I saw this happen I was a little surprised, but I quickly realised that the skin of someone's breast is likely a lot cleaner than their hands, so I got over it.
  • When I spoke with one person about why women kept their cash there, they mentioned that it was a lot less likely to be nicked than if they carried a purse around with them all the time. If money is tight, it makes sense to want to protect it as much as possible.
  • I have seen other women stick their keys or phone in their bra when heading to the beach. "Where else are you gonna put it?" was one comment I got, referring to how most women's clothing doesn't have pockets.
  • Putting a sign up to say you won't accept bra money achieves absolutely nothing. All someone has to do is take their cash out before they enter the store. Not a very useful system if you really want to protect your staff from breast germs.
  • I have frequented many mens toilets, obviously. MOST MEN DO NOT WASH THEIR HANDS AFTER USING A TOILET. Sorry, but it's true. If you're honestly scared of germs, and not just discriminating against people who are unable to carry a purse with them everywhere, then you wouldn't accept cash from any male who used his hands to pass it to you.
  • I had a bloke once pull money out of his socks. From memory, he was a tradie who found it easier to keep his cash there than have his wallet slip from his pocket while working. He looked like he was working hard keeping the economy ticking, and deserved his Iced Coffee. I hardly felt within my rights to refuse his business.
  • Not everybody has the same background, upbringing, or habits regarding the handling of cash. If a sizeable number of people in our community see carrying cash in their bra as a practical habit, perhaps its worth considering why they do it rather than just declare "that's gross" and ban them from shopping at your store.

One person interviewed who erected the sign banning bra money told the ABC it was "a matter of respect."

Respect goes both ways. Understanding that some people live very different lives to you, are dealing with circumstances you will never be exposed to, and are just trying to transport their cash as safely as they can, is probably worth thinking about. Being forbidden from buying food from a store because the safest way for you to carry your cash is in your bra seems a little disrespectful.
