Geraldton Dog Rescue Dog of the Week

Geraldton Dog Rescue's dog of the week this week is Raffa, a very sweet little Chihuahua mix. Raffa is approximately 1 year old, he uses the doggy door and is house trained.

Raffa gets along OK with cats and is good with other small dogs. He is not at all yappy but will let you know when someone is at the door. He is learning to walk on lead and is getting some basic obedience lessons while in foster care.

He is very good in a car and just curls up and goes to sleep so may be a good travelling companion. Raffa does not dig or chew things so would be great either indoors or out. He will be the perfect pet in any home.

Geraldton Dog Rescue is a not for profit organization run solely by volunteers. All GDR dogs cost $350 and have been bathed and flea treated, vet checked, vaccinated, wormed, micro-chipped and de-sexed. If you would like to view a dog or become a volunteer please call 0400219719. Geraldton Dog Rescue can also be contacted via their website www.geraldtondogrescue.com.au or you can find them on Facebook.

Getting your groceries home delivered in Geraldton

When I moved to Geraldton 8 years ago, I remember going online to try and order my groceries. I was rather frustrated to discover that there was no such service available here.

Time went on, and eventually Woolworths rolled out home delivery for the city, but I no longer did the grocery shopping; that task was carried out usually by my wife. We had discussed trying home delivery once or twice, but the hassle of figuring out how to do it at the time seemed to outweigh the convenience of our existing shopping routine.

Then one month life got extremely hectic. A combination of sickness, work demands, exhaustion, multiple young children as well as high school aged children left us with very little time and energy to get the weekly grocery shopping done, so we gave home delivery a go. We jumped on the computer, followed the prompts, ordered our items, and hoped for the best.

Sure enough, the food rocked up when promised. The cold stuff was cold, the fruit and veg wasn't rotten, and from memory most of the items were correct.

The home delivery option was still relatively new for the Geraldton Woolworths store, and often there would be mistakes in the goods supplied. But a friendly phone call always had the matter sorted quickly or money refunded as needed.

We still needed to duck out and get extra milk, organic produce that Woolworths lacked and other bits and pieces here and there, but we continued to order online each week, usually on the iPad in front of a movie on a Thursday evening.

One day a few months ago, we needed our groceries delivered at a time that Woolworths were unavailable. I forget whether it was a public holiday or something, but the end result was my wife and kids headed to the shops to purchase the week's groceries.

When they returned, there was nothing but praises for the magical wonder that is home delivered groceries.

"We had to handle the food 5 times!" my wife exclaimed. "Into the trolley, out of the trolley onto the check out, back into the trolley, into the car, then out of the car into the house."

It seems home delivered groceries is a bit like air conditioning; once you've had it it's hard to live without it.

So I suggest you never get your groceries home delivered as it's hard to go without it once you've tried it.

*Footnote: We also seem to spend less when ordering online. Perhaps it's the ability to see the total as you select items, or perhaps it's the reduced temptation for items you don't really need.

Landcare grants open in Durack

Landcare and other community groups in Durack will be able to access a helping hand with the launch of the 25th Anniversary Landcare Grants 2014-15 as part of the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme, Melissa Price, Federal Member for Durack said today.

“The grant round is a fitting way to commemorate the twenty fifth anniversary by supporting the carers at what they do best – caring for the land,” Ms Price said.

“Interested groups can apply for up to $20,000 from a competitive pool of $5 million nationally, for projects that are local in nature.

“The grant round is designed to support local landcare projects as well as local natural resource management groups to help protect their local environment.

“This means that Indigenous communities, farmers, fishers and other land and sea managers in Durack, from the Kimberley to the Wheatbelt, could look at getting involved and make an application,” Ms Price said.

Ms Price reconfirmed the Australian Government’s commitment to ensuring 20 per cent of Australian Government investment made through the regional natural resource management organisations will be directed towards local projects and activities that are delivered by the community, under the National Landcare Programme’s regional stream.

“Essentially funding will be available on an annual basis to farmers, landcare and community groups in Durack so that they can continue with important on-ground works in their local communities,” Ms Price said.

The funding round opened on 19 September and closes on 20 October 2014.

Building industry puts the boots on to nail prostate cancer

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and Master Builders Geraldton Branch is inviting its members and others in the industry to join them for breakfast.

In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and the second most common cause of cancer-related death in men.

Master Builders and Totally Workwear will be hosting a BLUE BOOTS BREAKFAST on Thursday 25 September 2014 at 75 Flores Road, start time is 7am with a gold coin donation for breakfast.   Steel Blue will donate $10 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia for every pair of BLUE BOOTS sold.  Additionally we ask that your workplace join in and dress in blue for the day, it’s fun and raising  awareness and having a checkup could save a loved one’s life!

Master Builders Regional Manager, Di Gilleland, is one person who clearly sees the importance of “getting the message out there” to builders and others in the industry as a high priority.  Working in a male dominated industry she too has been on that other side when her husband Dennis was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009.

“Fortunately having a checkup and seeking a second opinion Dennis has now received the all clear and is making the most of a healthy lifestyle, free from cancer," Mrs Gilleland said.

“At the time it was like a horror movie. I remember us all being in total shock and then the realisation that there were just so many other men out there in the same situation; it just blew us away.

“With Steel Blue offering this generous donation I saw it as a win-win situation, raising awareness of prostate cancer and for the opportunity to raise funds for research to hopefully one day find a cure for this terrible disease.

“Remember if you are a male and over 40, now could be the right time to have your prostate checked,” Mrs. Gilleland concluded.

To attend the Blue Boots Breakfast, phone Penny Rae at Master Builders on 9921 5061 or email  crystal@mbawa.com.

Bad news if you were hoping to see fewer derelict buildings in town

You may recall the CGG council implemented a strategy not too long ago to entice owners of vacant and run down property in the CBD to put a tenant in or develop. They doubled the rates for unoccupied buildings.

But the rate payers were unsurprisingly not happy about paying the extra amount, and insteas of refurbing their run down eyesores, challenged the decision.

Now the State Administrative Tribunal has ruled against the CGG, meaning the council may even have to pay these investment groups back some of the rate money they've paid.

(From the SAT website: The Tribunal is the primary place for the review of decisions made by Government agencies, public officials and local governments. It also makes a wide variety of original decisions.)

Several drink drivers over the weekend

Geraldton Police on Twitter: "Chapman Valley Road crash- crumpled mess in the trees used to be a Mazda ute! Alcohol suspected- don't drink + drive."

Several incidents of motor vehicle accidents involving suspected drunk drivers occurred over the weekend.

A 35-year-old Hamilton Hill man had his bail refused and will face Geraldton Magistrates Court this morning charged with Driving under the Influence after his vehicle rolled on Chapmen Valley Road at about 11am on Saturday, September 20.

It will be alleged that the alcohol reading was 0.151% at the time of the accident.

Also on Saturday, a 21-year-old Rangeway male was charged after he was stopped in Utakarra with a blood alcohol level in excess 0.08% and failing to give way at a stop sign. He will appear in the Geraldton Magistrates Court later this month.

Warning to all Android Phone users

Reputable technology site Ars Technica has confirmed that a major security flaw in the Android web browser has been discovered.

The issue affects about half of Android phone users.

Essentially what the bug does is allow dodgy websites to capture passwords and other sensitive information you have entered in other sites.

So a website run by unscrupulous people that manage to get you to click on a link could capture your banking information or other private data.

Google has admitted the flaw exists and rushed to provide patches, but says that users of newer versions of Android, 4.4 and later are not affected. Nor are people who use Chrome as their browser instead of the standard Android browser.

Unfortunately only about a quarter of Android users are on 4.4+.

Google has issued patches to fix the flaw. You can find the links to the patches at the bottom of the Ars Technica article here: http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/09/android-browser-flaw-a-privacy-disaster-for-half-of-android-users/
