Lunatic drivers need seven years in jail

Imagine a man is walking down the mall in the middle of Perth. He is carrying a rifle. He starts firing the gun up in the air.

It's loud. People start fearing for their lives. They duck for cover. But he's not a terrorist. He's just having a bit of fun. He lets off a few more rounds into the sky as parents cover their children who are screaming. Everyone nearby is completely afraid for their lives.

One of the bullets hits a window in an upstairs building and narrowly misses a young lady's head.

Eventually he's run out of bullets and wanders off to have a beer.

The Police eventually catch up with the guy because one onlooker managed to film the event on their iPhone. The man appears before a magistrate, and claims he wasn't meaning to hurt anyone. He has a gun licence and realised now that what he was wielding was a dangerous weapon, not just a hunting tool, and he promises not to do it again. He's really sorry that some people got a little startled, and he regrets his actions.

But the magistrate is furious. He says the man needs to learn a lesson. So he takes away his gun licence and makes him hand over his gun for 28 days.

WAIT!!! HANG ON. THAT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN.

The guy would be all over the front of every newspaper in the country. Authorities would be trying to charge him under counter terrorism laws. He'd be in jail quicker than you could count to zero. He would be sued by every shop, person, or dog that was anywhere near the incident. He wouldn't be able to show his face in public if he ever did get out of prison. He'd have to change his name, and he'd end up living in a two horse town in the middle of nowhere for fear of retribution for the terror he caused to so many innocents. Even his family would have to relocate and change their names after the amount of press their black sheep idiot caused them.

AND YET...

Every day, idiots do essentially the same thing with a deadly tool, striking fear into the heart of their fellow citizens, when they drive like complete maniacs on our roads.

And our politicians and magistrates, despite promising to get serious every election, still have not got these people off our roads.

Sure, they made it more time consuming to get a licence. But I've just watched two teenagers get their licence. All the log books in the world don't make up for the fact that the crappy computer game you have to pass to get your licence is a complete and utter joke. There are still plenty of incompetent people driving around today.

And yes... it's now illegal to have car advertisements that show cars breaking the road rules without little disclaimers pop up on the screens. That will stop people thinking hooning is cool. Clap. Clap. Excuse me while I finish playing Need for Speed then watch Furious 7. (Note, I don't think banning those movies or games is a smart idea btw)

And cops can confiscate people's cars. Yay. But guess what. Tomorrow that same idiot can hop in their mate's car and drive it, even without a licence. Just like so many of them do. Just follow any Police account on Twitter and you'll soon be sick of all the stories of unlicensed drivers being arrested.

Turns out the cars don't actually ask if you have a licence. They just start when you turn the key. It's as though people handing down the penalties use chauffeurs or something and don't actually realise how cars work.

Today my wife had her life put at risk by 3... that's right... 3... idiot drivers. She was driving from Mandurah to Geraldton with my 6 month old in the back.

Here are her words:

“I am fuming right now.
What will it take Geraldton residents? Yet another mother dead and baby motherless!!
Do you really have to experience it for yourself before you stop over taking a car and truck over a solid white line with oncoming traffic!! If I didn’t pay full 110% attention and slowed down in preparation to make a gap for you to get off quickly my baby and I could have been your next biggest life mistake!!!!!!
Three cars did this to me only ten minutes south of Geraldton going through Greenough. So what if you get home 5 min later than expected! At least then MY family may see me return to give them hugs.”

We have all made dumb mistakes on the road. A moment of inattentiveness. A few seconds of zoning out. HOLY CRAP DID I JUST DO THAT?! We snapped out of it and thanked God for another chance.

But that's not what I'm talking about.

What I'm talking about is deliberate attempts to save a few minutes of time by taking massive risks and breaking a clear laws.

And what's the worst thing?!

The fact that none of us are shocked. We see this kind of thing ALL. THE. TIME.

It's time we charged these people with the crimes they are committing. They have caused terror. They have endangered lives.

They may not like the sentence. But I'm sure they'd hate having blood on their hands even more.

Criminal Code Western Australia (link)

304. Act or omission causing bodily harm or danger

(1) If a person omits to do any act that it is the person’s duty to do, or unlawfully does any act, as a result of which —

(a) bodily harm is caused to any person; or

(b) the life, health or safety of any person is or is likely to be endangered,

the person is guilty of a crime and is liable to imprisonment for 7 years.

Driverless cars can't get here fast enough.

What will it take Geraldton residents?

This happened only moments ago. If you know who these drivers are or have dash cam footage of them please report them to the Police ASAP. I'm off to buy a dash cam.

Peter Bisby, the Regional Manager of Redink Homes Geraldton was last night elected Chairman of the Master Builders Geraldton Branch.

Peter takes over from Serena Giudice who has been the Chairman of the Master Builders Geraldton Branch for the last 4 years.

“Mr Bisby has been actively involved in our local Geraldton Committee for seven years so he has a good understanding of how the industry and our member-based Association works, said regional Manager Di Gilleland.  “Peter also sits on the Master Builders Housing Council at their head office in West Perth.

The role of regional Chairman is really important, with such a wealth of experience and knowledge required of the building industry in the mid-west.  Peter certainly has the experience to carry out this new position”, she said.

Mrs Gilleland said the past year has been challenging for those involved in the building industry, with the current downturn it has been tough for many.

“There will always be challenges for builders and specialist contractors and that’s why we need a strong Association and an active membership to respond to these issues, such as planning approvals, industrial relations, energy efficiency, apprenticeship training, safety standards and the like”, Mrs Gilleland said.

“Mr Bisbys’ expertise and his additional role on housing council will mean us having an extra voice for our regional committee and our members.  We have a number of new initiatives set for 2016 so an exciting year ahead”, said Mrs Gilleland.

Flares release as part of HMAS Sydney II Memorial Service

The City of Greater Geraldton wishes to advise local residents that they may hear a series of loud noises tonight, Thursday 19 November, as part of the 74th HMAS Sydney II Memorial Service.

At approximately 7pm, a large cannon shot will be fired as well as a display of multiple flares off the coast as part of the ceremony, kindly donated by the Geraldton Volunteer Marine Rescue and Midwest Fireworks.

The City also wishes to remind guests that there is a free shuttle bus service leaving from the QEII Centre from 5pm onwards as Gummer Avenue Carpark will be closed to traffic from 4:30pm to 8pm.

It is recommended that those people wishing to attend the ceremony allow themselves extra time in order to avoid arriving late.

The service will commence at 5:50pm.

For more information on the ceremony visit the CGG website http://ow.ly/UP9nM

Migrant family on Welcome Walls targeted in a scam attempt

A migrant family, whose names appear on Fremantle’s Welcome Walls, has been the target of a scam attempt and there are concerns others may also be targeted.

Scammers have contacted a family listed on one of the Fremantle panels, demanding a payment of $599 for the names to remain on the walls.

Western Australian Museum urge people to ignore the scammers demand and hang up immediately.

The concern is highest for vulnerable people such as seniors from migrant families where English might not be their first language.

Anyone who is contacted by people purporting to be from Government departments demanding money, should always independently contact that organisation to verify if the approach is genuine.

Never use any details the suspicious caller or email has given you.  Refer to your phone book or a known official website.

You can report scams to WA ScamNet via email or by calling 1300 30 40 54.

Dead trees to be removed for safety concerns

Cathedral Avenue will be partially closed this weekend, due to the removal of three large dead trees in the area.  The City is always reluctant to remove trees as they add to the liveability of the City. However in this case, the trees are dead and pose a serious risk to pedestrians and motorists.

Other trees in this vicinity will be pruned to remove their dead wood.  Because of the height of the trees, specialist equipment will be brought up from Perth.

Traffic management will be in place from 7.30am - 3.30pm on Saturday 21 November and 9.00am-5.30pm on Sunday 22 November. Car Park No. 6 (the SGIO Car Park) will also be closed during this time.

Empowering youth initiatives to help young people into jobs

Member for Durack Melissa Price is inviting organisations in Durack to put forth fresh and innovative ideas to help vulnerable young Australians find and keep a job.

Minister for Employment Senator Michaelia Cash today released the grant guidelines for the new Empowering YOUth Initiatives, inviting organisations to apply for funding to deliver projects that help young people at risk of welfare dependency into work.

“I invite not-for-profit community organisations to put forward proposals for innovative projects that offer a different approach to those currently available,” Ms Price said.

“The Government recognises that some young people face greater barriers to finding and holding onto a job than their peers, for example those who leave school early or come from a different cultural background.”

The Empowering YOUth Initiatives are part of the $331 million Youth Employment Strategy announced in the 2015-16 Budget and follows the release of guidelines last month for the new Transition to Work service, a further Government initiative to tackle youth unemployment.

Minister Cash said the Government is keen to leverage off the local knowledge and experience of community organisations working closely with vulnerable young people.

“These vulnerable young Australians face greater challenges and have a higher risk of long-term unemployment and a life of welfare dependency,” Minister Cash said.

“That is why we’re investing $50 million in the Empowering YOUth Initiatives - to give young people the extra help they need to move into work.”

The first round of projects set up under the Empowering YOUth Initiatives will focus on young people who are living in regional areas with high levels of social disadvantage, early school leavers, Indigenous, or from a culturally and linguistically diverse background.

“We really want to encourage not-for-profit community organisations to think outside the square and run innovative projects to engage with those who are most at risk of being consigned to a lifetime of welfare dependency,” Minister Cash said.

“This could be an innovative way to prevent unemployment, remove barriers to employment, or just as importantly, sustain employment.”

The learnings from these trials will be used to shape future service delivery to achieve better employment outcomes for young people

The first round of projects will commence from March 2016.

Information sessions for interested organisations will be held in capital cities during November and via online webinars.

Its in the Bag

We would love to put a shout out to the ladies of Geraldton for a project we would like help with -

We all know that domestic violence and homelessness for women increases at this end of the year.
The Share the Dignity program helps women who arrive in these unhappy circumstances.

Between now and 11.12.2015 we are participating in “Its in the Bag”.
It’s the simplest thing – most ladies  have a handbag we don’t use – and we all collect the shampoos and soap from hotels we stay in.
Put the items in the bag and add a small tissue pack, a lipstick sample you didn’t use…….
Then contact Su 0438 239 922 or Chez 0438 643 989 to organise a drop off or a pick up.

After 11.12.2015 we will take the bags we have collected to our refuge.
I don’t know how many ladies have been in the position where they have nothing…….
A new bank account, Centrelink….. and all you have is a plastic shopping bag to put your papers in.
There is no dignity in that.

Help us to share a little dignity before the year is out.

Thank you,
Su and Chez

Report on Hydraulic Fracturing delivered to Parliament

Nationals WA Member of Parliament Paul Brown has welcomed the tabling of the report from the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs on the ‘Implications for Western Australia of Hydraulic Fracturing for Unconventional Gas,’ to the Western Australian Parliament.

“Having been a member of the Committee that has spent a considerable amount of time investigating the unconventional shale gas industry that is emerging in Western Australia, I am confident that the report will ensure that private landowners and the government are better able to reconcile the challenges and benefits in development of the industry,” Mr Brown said.

“This inquiry was initiated by the Committee as we saw the considerable level of concern that was being experienced in communities across the state as proposals for shale gas exploration developed.”

“The modern shale gas industry is very early in its development in Western Australia and the Committee has recognised that this gives the WA government the opportunity to learn from both the positive and negative experiences of other states and nations”. Mr Brown said.

The Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs held numerous hearings with private citizens, government departments, industry members and opponents of the shale gas industry over the two years of the inquiry, along with visits to sites in the United Kingdom, United States of America and South Australia. The Committee also met with a number of academic, government and Not-for-Profit agencies during their visit overseas.

Mr Brown said, “The Committee has been unanimous in the findings and recommendations that have formed its report to Parliament. We have kept an un-biased view of the industry and determined the facts from the large amount of evidence and opinion that we were provided.”

One of the issues that the Committee focussed on was the importance of land access agreements and has recommended that an independent statutory body be established to better safeguard the ability of landowners to negotiate with resource companies that are seeking to develop shale gas facilities on private land.

“The Committee has also called for more robust regulations to ensure that full transparency of all chemicals used in the hydraulic fracturing process is available to the public. We have also recommended that the government ban the use of all benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) chemicals in the industry.” Mr Brown said.

The Minister for Minerals and Petroleum, Hon Bill Marmion MLA, will now have ninety days to consider the recommendations that have been made by the Committee in the report before making his response to Parliament on behalf of the government.

The iPhone and iPad feature that every parent should know about

If you’re a parent of young children, chances are you’ve used your iPhone or iPad to babysit your kids more than once.

But did you know each iPhone and iPad has a feature that allows you to hand the device to your child, and prevent them from leaving the app it is currently running?

You can even set a time limit on it, so the device will stop operating after however long you decide.

It’s a brilliant feature for parents wanting to make sure little Johny doesn’t delete your emails while being entertained for 10 minutes while you’re at the doctors. Or if you have youtube addict kids like me, you can set the device to only allow, say, 30 minutes before shutting down. Enough to watch an episode of The Diamond Minecart, not enough to make them forget to go and bounce the basketball at some point.

But the feature is also super useful for teachers who perhaps want their students to access a certain app during a test or exam, but not have access to, say, Google.

Even stores and businesses who use iPads as displays or tools will find this feature handy, as it stops customers or staff from being able to access other apps.

It’s called GUIDED ACCESS

Follow our step by step instructions below. It’s pretty much the same for iPad and iPhone, and iPod touch for that matter.

Setting Up

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Select General

3. Select Accessibility

4. Select Guided Access

5. Turn on Guided Access

It’s not essential to enter a passcode at this point. You will be prompted later.

6. Select Time Limits

7. Time limit settings pertain to what happens when the time has expired in Guided Access. For example, later when you activate it, you can set the device to only function for 10 minutes, or however long you chose.

If you want a ring tone to sound at the end of the time, select Sound.

If you just want the device to speak at the end of the time, turn on Speak.

I’m turning on Speak.

Now your device is set up and Guided Access is ready to use whenever you want. Here's how to operate Guided Access once it's set up.

8. Open the app you want your child to access. We’re going to use YouTube as an example right now.

9. Triple click the home button.

That means press it 3 times quickly.

10. Select Options in the bottom left

11. Choose your settings

Sleep Wake Button - This operates the button that turns the device on or off. Do you want them to be able to do this?

Volume Buttons - You can make it so they can’t turn the volume up at all if you need silence… and so they can’t turn it down either. Or allow them to have control over the volume.

Motion - Turn this off if you don’t want them to be able to rotate the screen. Handy for little kids who may inadvertantly rotate the screen on their iPads.

Keyboards - Turn this off to disable the ability to enter information via the keyboard

Touch - You may want to turn this off if you’re just giving the iPad to the child to watch a video, but don’t want them to be able to accidentally close it or skip around. If this is off touching the screen will do nothing.

Time Limit - Turn this on and select how long you want Guided access to operate for. It can be as low as 1 minute, and as high as 23 hours and 59 minutes. If you leave this off, guided access will remain in operation until you deactivate it.

12. Once you’ve chosen the settings you want, select Done.

13. Now draw on the screen with your finger around any area of the screen you do NOT want them to be able to operate. For example, there may be a menu within the app you don’t want them to be able to touch, but you’re happy for them to touch everywhere else on the screen.

If you just draw a rough circle or square, your device will correct the outline and straighten it up a bit. You can then drag it to make it larger or move it as needed.

If you’re fine with them touching all of the screen, you can skip this step.

14. Now you’re ready to go. Select Start or Resume.

15. Enter a passcode. Then re enter the passcode

16. Guided access started. Hand the device over, and rest assured that your precious emails won’t be deleted.

17. If the home button is pressed while in Guided Access mode, a warning appears at the top of the screen.

Note: You can end Guided Access at any time by triple clicking the home button then entering the passcode. If the wrong passcode is entered, the user will be unable to try again for a short time.

18. When time gets low, a warning appears.

19. Once time is up the Time Expired screen appears and the device will no longer operate

20. You'll need to triple click the home button

21. Enter the passcode to end Guided Access mode

22. Now select End

23. Your phone is back to normal.

So if you've ever asked,
"How can I set a timer on my iPhone or iPad?" or
"How can I stop my kid from leaving the app they're in?" or
"How do I lock the app on my iPhone or iPad?" or
"How can I stop my kid from deleting things on my iPhone or iPad?"
then Guided Access is the feature you need to know about.

Local man with speed camera warning sign is back at it

Back in March we heard about young Jake who was warning motorists to slow down by parking himself on the road with a slow down sign, up the road from the speed camera.

Jake contacted Everything Geraldton at the time:

"Hello I was wondering if you could make a post if anyone spots the speed camera to post it on your page 😊 I have a slow down sign which I was using today and was working great it was slowing down a lot of motorists"

But his efforts to slow motorists down didn't last long.

"I got fined and was told verbal to move on and they took my sign till I dispute it in court. $100 dollars and for obstructing an officer while on duty."

We hadn't heard from Jake until this month...

"Back at it again!" He said. "Took them to court and they dropped the charges."

We asked Jake to tell a bit of his story and why he has the sign.

"I would like to slow down any motorist while driving who might happen to be a few kms over the limit and not pay a hefty fine for that  -  therefore keeping money back in the comunity... makes you think twice about whats going on when i can get fined and my sign taken for slowing down motorist and therefore saving lives."

He also wanted to make clear he doesn't want any money.

"I'm not doing this for donations so please keep your money in your pockets but thankyou anyway just a simply wave is enough to keep me out there 😊"

Not everyone in the community thinks motorists should be made aware of speed camera locations. Some see it as alowing those who are speeding to get away with it. But others see the cameras as doing little so save lives, and just a money making tool for the government.

You might notice the 'Revenue Raiser Restance' logo at the bottom of the sign. This Facebook centric group has gained a lot of traction in recent months, supplying their supporters with signage while trying to make more noise about their point of view. They currently have over 35,000 fans and are seeking to rally support for their cause. They claim most Police officers support them, but seem to have many run ins with speed camera operators who get frustrated when a sign is parked down the road from their camera.

Lucky Bay

How wrong is the changes to camping on the beach at lucky bay, we have done it for years Lm 53, and have been going to lucky bay since l was five, now the Northampton shire want to make people camp in Bush land near the camps at half way, up that, how hot would that be not to mention the ticks you would get , how about people write to the shire, and voice your opinions. So Wrong.
